I had to do this with a Very Scottish mate/colleague in America, he had to take me to shops/restaurants for weeks so I could be a sort of middle man. It was great.

I had to translate for a Scottish woman when on holiday....the Italian waiter found her unfathomable. I'm sure he thought I was bilingual. :)

    This morning's Echo.....

    <http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/sa...Vital_few_weeks_for_Saints_and_Puel/?ref=mac>

The "comments" make interesting reading and a contrast to much of the perceived wisdom on this website which is probably far more understanding and sympathetic towards Claude Puel. The Echo comments tend to be dominated by trolls but this morning some of the responses are quite well thought out.

    Laces

Last month I would have probably agreed with you that Puel needs another season albeit I have been disappointed by what I have seen at home and at Wembley, In fairness, the "better" performances have probably been away and I would concede that the fact that I don't go to away games means I can only comment on what I have seen which may be an under-representation.

It is interesting to listen to the opinions of others either involved in the game or in the media. The consensus is that this has been a difficult at worst or transitional at best season. Flores got the chop at Watford earlier this season and was no worse than Puel. You could argue that the Wembley trip brushed over some fundamental problems. Granted that there have been injury problems, the worrying thing for me is the often uninspiring football. People are unlikely to want to fork out £600 for another season largely devoid of entertainment and certainly devoid of goals. Revenue if important to the club and it's sponsors and I feel it is going to be difficult next season if there is a downturn in predicted season ticket sales where fans feel reluctant to pay a good sum of money where they might consider themselves to be fortunate to see one goal per match. I don't think the injury issue really washes anymore now that we have bought Gabbinadini.

The other aergument, as opposed to looking through rose-tinted glasses is that whilst everyone agrees the squad needs strengthening, you are assuming that we will be able to attract players that add benefit to the team. The recent signings such as Boufal, Hjojberg and Pied have not added anything for numerous reasons. Gabbiadini does look like a quality acquisition and I am unable to comment on either the goalkeeper from Nice or Caceres as they have yet to feature. The "best" signing this season has been Redmond who has increasingly looked sharper but I wonder how much better he might look with a better coach? he joined Saints with aspirations of plying for England and I am not sure that his changes have been increased by the move.

In fairness to Puel. his most significant achievement has been with the academy. JWP is now living up to his potential and the most improved player in the squad. The emergence of Stephens is an unexpected bonus and Mc Queen looks a very good prospect indeed. Just how many other players are likely to come through will be interesting.

    Yep, my feeling too.

I'm not (yet) asking for him to go. I have no issue with him being given another transfer window, and subsequently a go next season. He absolutely needs to improve the football, but I don't see why he shouldn't be given the chance to do that.

But if the club decided to remove in the summer, or he decided to walk, then I really wouldn't be shedding any tears. I'll remember this season, because of certain "highlights", but I cannot say that I have enjoyed it.

I like him, not convinced early season (bemused by diamonds and rotation) but really like his passion on the touchline and willingness to change.

Of course part of this process is the "make anything Saints good" mentality I have where any signing is suddenly 'ok' even if a bit crap. I expect I'd rationalise it even if we signed one of those rapey players, well maybe not!

He's never going to be a media darling, y'know with the snooze inducing press stuff. But I suspect he actually has a good football brain and the club will reap rewards from his willingness to develop youth for some years to come.

The bottom line is always "what else is out there", lacking a black box I can't see a lot better.

    Just a couple of things:

You obviously missed that Redmond has now got an England cap.

How many season tickets would you expect to sell? 20,000 a fair rough estimate? Well 20,000 x £600 = £12m, or in laymans terms, peanuts to a PL club if they remain in the PL. Entertaining football will take a back seat to results if all the club cares about revenue as Puel is set to deliver another season in the top flight.

Redmond was superb at Wembley. In the run up games, he looked to have caused the opposition a number of problems. I concede that he was been inconsistent and flattered to deceive in his initial performances, but when he is on form, he frequently looks like our best hope of scoring. In what has been a low-scoring season, he has contributed 7 goals this season.

In comparison with Mane it is possible to see why you might be disappointed but, in what is a poor side, Redmond is the one addition in 2016 /17 who has retained a place in the squad and actually looks like he would cause the opposition problems.

Of the new recruits this season, who would you say have been better than Redmond?

I think he was making reference to you saying Redmond's England chances have not improved since moving to Saints. That is a strange thing to say considering, well, since he joined saints he has now been capped for England.

Also, I would say that Redmond has come on leaps and bounds. He couldn't make a real impression in a Norwich team, fighting against relegation. He came to Saints, took quite a few games to get the feel of his new found status and responsibility, and is now a properly consistent danger man, more often than not making a real difference. His gaining an England cap is due recognition of that. Now we can put that down to Puel, or SFC as a whole, or both. I think Puel and SFC are drawing out the potential that has been stalled in Redmond for a season or two.
