Over 1200 bets placed over a ten year period. 'Mr Enlightened' knew exactly what he was doing. Barton has flouted the rules and courted controversy his entire career, and it's about time something caught up with him.
It's not ignorance of his behalf either, as players are aware of the rules and penalties - he is just a selfish ego driven thug who strives to be perceived as misunderstood. Barton is a horrible sympton of the modern game, where money is thrown at exceptionally average players who are placed on ridiculous pedestals, and live to believe their own hype. Only a few years ago he was moaning about not being the England captain!!
Zero sympathy from me, and I hope he doesn't win the inevitable appeal.
 
A lot of footballers arguing back that the rules were changed in 2012 so why is he being charged for bets from 2009?

It's not to defend Barton, but the whole thing stinks. Especially when you consider how much money the football federations collect from bookies.
