Just what is going on with the blue few, I see that they only had a crowd of 16,496! Soon I will have to start calling they the blue hand full or even individually by name! I know its the summer holidays and crowds will be down but I just can't see how they never sold out for such a big game! A south coast derby and there was almost as many Brighton fans as skates, let's be honest here they don't have much to fill so its a bit of a poor show! I fear for them after such a marquee signing as Benjani even if his wages are subsidised by his pension! with those sort of crowds they won't be able to afford to pay for the petrol for the team mini bus ( a couple more signings and there bus will be almost full) let alone pay the player wages................. again! I guess once again it will be down to Saints fans to start a collection to get them through the winter, oh well I suppose there's always comfort in familiarity
Don't be too hard on them. After all we only managed another 9,000 more than them. Imagine what their gate would be if they weren't suuuch a big club
Your right Fran and we were in league 1 so that would of been more of a crowd puller then the little old championship!
Talking of flags, I know Markus's flag was out at the Memorial game, but did it come out at the Leeds game. Are we ready to be trusted with it yet?
It will soon be quicker to announce the names of the crowd to the team than to announce the names of the team to the crowd
Lol @ Benjani. He scored a couple of hat tricks for Portsmouth and went on to bigger and better things, failed, now he is back breathing in the smog of Portsmouth once more. I bet his family are just delighted.
In the same way that I don't despise Pompey, like a lot of Saints fans do, I don't otherwise worry too much about their condition either. Like other opposition clubs, I wouldn't want them to go out of existence. To me, they are just another team that occasionally we might have to play, only they're a bit closer to Southampton than everyone else. I accept that mine might be a unique view about the Fratton Few down the M27.
It's not that I hate Pompey, I just don't want them to have bragging rights over us ever, ever again. We have to work with these guys for heaven sakes..being kind when we thrash them has to be the greatest feeling in the world.
Yeah, interesting point that. During Saints tenure of The Dell, Fratton Park was the bigger ground by quite a few thousand [30,000 standing compared to 40,000 standing, IIRC]. But Pompey were permanently stuck in a cycle of 2nd, 3rd and 4th division football. They came up for air in the late 1980's, only to go straight back down again. And in the 1970's, Saints dipped into their division and they promptly got themselves relegated the season after, if memory serves. So the only significant time, in the last 50 years, that Pompey have had the so-called bragging rights, has been a season after their Premiership promotion, up until a couple of weeks ago, where parity, at the very least, has been restored. In a sense, their bragging rights has been highly debatable, all along, in any case, as their dated facilities, poor infrastructure and financial ruin has been a subject of much merriment amongst Saints supporters, through our own downward blip. Thinking about it though, there are certain parts of our blip that I never want to see again as a Saints fan, and I wouldn't wish on any club.
