The Leicester City "spiral" watch!

Discussion in 'The Premier League' started by Hoddle is a god, Jan 17, 2016.

  1. You keep banging on about this, as though you think that taking a penalty at this level is easy, and that anyone can do it!
    <doh>

There is a reason why Kane takes penalties and a reason why Suarez doesn't.

Have to agree with HIAG on this one.
Pisses me off when people say "But he takes penalties".....so ****ing what?
A penalty is no less a goal than a 30 yard screamer!

I didn't say that they shouldn't count. But the idea of a penalty is that it's a golden chance to score.

I think you can both agree that it's more difficult to score in open play than it is for a stationary ball placed only 12 yards out (as a whole).

Liverpool had 16 penalties in the time Suarez spent at the club but I don't know how many of those Suarez was available because of his suspensions. Suarez didn't take them because one of the all time great penalty takers was at Liverpool. Gerrard scored 46, missing only 8.

I've seen hundreds of chances missed that were far easier than any penalty.

Theoretically, penalties should be easier. But there are several factors that can make it far from a simple task. The pressure on the taker, knowing he's expected to score. It can depend if the penalty is at home or away. If you're away, or facing the away end when you take the penalty, there's all kinds of distractions from the crowd. Booing, whistling, waving, even chucking things - anything to try and put you off.

The 2 seasons that Suarez scored more than 20 gaols Liverpool scored 171 goals of which Saurez got 54 of them ...in the 3 seasons Kane scored more than 20 goals the Spurs scored a 187 goals of which Kane got 66 , even if you minus the penalties he has 55 . Pretty good for a guy who doesn't get the fanfare that Suarez gets . As for assists , not sure who took corners or free kicks for either but it might be reason .

Apologies if I've got this wrong but are you arguing Kane is as good as Suarez?

No, not at all , just that he isn't that much better than some make him out to be . All comparisons have a taste of apple and oranges to them , Kane is as important to the Spurs as Suarez was to Liverpool . Also , I bet Suarez can take a bigger bight out of that apple or orange :)

  10. I think Roofie is suggesting that he's better, Libby.

Is that so hard to swallow?

Remember how Leicester City were going to embarrass England in the Champions League?

Remember how those bitter fans from envious clubs whined that the Premier League champions would harm our co-efficient in Europe?

Remember how Leicester would do so badly that soon the Premier League might only get three Champions League places in future years.

What would Arsene Wenger do then, if fourth place did not matter? Good job for him that England will be pretty much guaranteed four spots anyway from 2018-19 onwards.

    Ah, yes. We remember.

Well, we remembered it when Leicester won their group and qualified for the knock-out stages with a game to spare.

Wes Morgan scores against Sevilla as Leicester City booked their place in Champions League quarter-final

And we certainly remembered it when they reached the quarter-final, as the last English club standing.

So, now that they are out, just what has City's exploits in the Champions League done to the co-efficient?

Read more: Can Leicester City conquer Europe again under Shakey? Talking points from Champions League

Well, they have pulled it up considerably, while others have dragged it down.

Leicester earned 22 co-efficient points for England this season, thanks to their five wins, a draw, and reaching the last eight. That has put them 56 th out of the 453 clubs included over the past five seasons.

It's a pretty complicated formula, which includes then adding 20 per cent of your associations co-efficient over the same five-year period. It is one which will take far too much time and effort explaining here. If you really want to get lost in that maths labyrinth, you can read up on all of it here.

Here's the basics: England's overall co-efficient for this season is 14.071. That's worked out by averaging out the scores of all the English clubs who were in Europa and Champions League action. That puts us third for this season, and keeping us third overall.

Read more: Leicester City can qualify for Champions League again, says Wes Morgan.

City's is the highest of all the seven clubs involved. Manchester United are next on 20, but could overtake as they are into the Europa League semi-final. Then it's Arsenal (19), Man City (18), Tottenham (10), Southampton (6) and West Ham (1.5).

So, it was Tottenham who dragged it down, knocked out in the group stages.

    Not Leicester, after all.

    How embarrassing…

Probably one reason why this was a Hiagesque WUM FAILURE !

    ...and corners

PS taking a penalty at any level is way easier than scoring from open play ...easy to prove ...just compare Harry's penalty conversion percentage to his open play goal attempt conversion percentage...

This has been a footballing educational broadcast for the benefit of the less knowledgeable football fan.

The only thing that will be remembered about Leicester, this season, is that they were the most embarrassing defending title holders, ever, in the Prem, that they got dumped out of the CL, never again to appear anywhere near it, and that this season marked the beginning of their slow slide back into total obscurity.

It's been fun while it lasted lads, but don't let the door hit your arse on your way out of this board.

    Cheers, lads!

...sorry buddy but that doesn't stack up ...Played a good standard myself and took penalties...didn't miss one for two seasons...did practice a lot.

4 places where virtually impossible for the keeper to save ....bottom and top corners.

From open play you can beat the keeper and still have it cleared off the line by a defender... can't happen with a penalty.

Not saying it's easy ...but a professional should be practicing every day in training...

I agree with all of this. I also played a reasonable level and believe that professionals should find scoring from penalties relatively easy.

  17. Playing in your local Cubs 5-aside league isn't the same, Bluey. You have a rush goalie, for a start.

This, I played 2nd tier football for 17 years never missed a penalty in all that time scoring from 12 yards should be a given.

By you Quentin perhaps ..that's your nature. For the vast majority of football fans our European adventure has been vastly enjoyable and even inspirational.

As to embarrassing? ...I think this season's European embarrassment for English clubs rests irrevocably in North London as we can all agree.

The only debate will be about which is worse ...being soundly beaten in the last 16 by one of the European giants? ...or going out whilst there was still a game to play in the group stage and then suffering further humiliation in the B competition at the hands of Gent?

I'm sure you have your own view Quentin? ...:)

    Cheers ...
