Fantastic quality photos. I'm sure I can't be the only one who suffers from WWII perceptions of black and white photography, to the point that one almost thinks of people living in a monochrome world back then. But the only thing limiting colour photography was film emulsions of the time. They were expensive and they required a lot of light to work. The quality of optics of top cameras was really very good indeed. A great quality 1940's camera with a modern emulsion would take a really fine photograph [a mate of mine use to do this because he hadn't the money at the time to buy a modern camera]. Notice the depth of view where the foreground and backgrounds are often blurred. That's down to getting as much light onto the emulsion as possible, and sacrificing depth of field to do so. That's the limitation of the film, but the results are amazing. It really is just history and I shouldn't be so colour blind. I'm copying those photos. Cheers Fran.
As far as stouts go, Guinness is right at the bottom of the list, but it seems to be the most popular due to advertising I guess. I used to drink Beamish, but that seems to have dropped of the face of the Earth (England at least).
Yes, I've had a pint of Beamish in the past. Not bad at all. Try the Acorn Brewery pint if you find it. You're right, it was a stout, not a porter [done some research since]. I've been looking for Titanic Brewery's Chocolate & Vanilla Stout. Had one of those a month ago and I haven't seen it since. Awesome [I don't use that word lightly] beer.
The best stout I've had lately was this: Absolutely glorious, made by St. Austell Brewery. Comes in bottles as well, but I've not sampled those.
St Austell Ales too. Home of the famous Hicks Special Draught [HSD]. I bet that stout is good. Bottles are nice, but why bother when you can have the real thing.
when I first arrived in Novi Sad, Serbia I was happy to find the only Irish pub in town. Pint of Guinness please! ah we don't sell Guinness. Ok Kilkenny? Actually we don't have any Irish beers. Jamesons? nope. Do you have anything Irish? well we have a flag! is Heineken OK? yeh close enough. (you can now get Guinness at the Shamrock bar)
My favourite stout is actually Murphy's. Or Guinness in Dublin..it is Soooo much different. It really doesn't travel well. To me Murohy's is nearer Dublin Guinness that 'English' Guinness ever is. Making me thirsty. But if the day has a 'y' in it I am afraid it is a nice Italian, maybe a Barolo or Amarone yum.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-39647622 Really feel for the lad. I know he knew the risks, but life can change in a flash.
Very sad. My lad was in Formula Ford back in 2001 and had a bad one into a wall at Donnington. I remember my heart stopped when I saw them taking him away. Thankfully, he was ok (crash helmet saved him - but it was split open) and he eventually saw sense (well his Dad ran out of money and 9/11 happened which dried up sponsorship) and got a "real job" in IT. Hope Billy recovers and has the mental strength to get over it.
Conservaive US broadcaster Fox News dumps their own conservative broadcaster and presenter Bill O'Reilly amid claims of sexual harrassment: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-39647434 I've watched video on Youtube of this chap's shows, and he has that typical American high-minded morale stance which doesn't stack up with his views on the less well off and less capable in society. And he doesn't give a **** about gun crime either. The impression one gets of his unspoken belief is, let them shoot themselves into extinction. But isn't it strange that the ones shouting long and hard about morale values, from conservative platforms, whilst getting paid an absolute mint for it, are some of ones doing the worst behind the scenes. Well they've ditched him. I'm sure he won't mind. Some other part of the SKY/FOX domain will pick him up after a short period. It's what they generally do. He may have to go to radio for a stint.
His show always pissed me off when I go to Atlanta to see my daughter- for some reason her and her hubby live with fox news on and I just used to turn away and grab a drink when he was on. He never sat happy with me if you get why I mean. Good riddance I say.
http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/152...gloats_in_abusive_tirade_at_club/?ref=mr&lp=8 Pitch invader fined....sounds a right charmer. Has several previous offences....can't see him getting a job in the future even if he manages to scrape a degree. Don't youngsters know that most employers look at your social media stuff before hiring for any decent job. And not unknown for offenders to be called back by courts if their 'regrets' are seen to be false.
Apologies in advance to Helen and anyone else who will be in Wales next week for the decline in the weather, especially around the Snowdonia region. please log in to view this image
It's OK, I'm the other end of the country... not that it'll make any difference. It hasn't rained for weeks so it'll probably all come down next week now. Sorry, WS
