He didn't compare his looks to a gorilla. He said the vacant expression in his eyes reminded him of a gorilla. It someone said a player had the unblinking gaze of a cobra it wouldn't mean they thought they looked like a snake.
Some people are getting as overwrought as the permanently wound up Scousers.

Agreed. The worst part is about the drug dealers and calling him thick. What is that based on?

I agree. Those who have made that highly insulting link between black people and Gorillas are the ones we should be looking closer at.

As for the pay jibe, is it really any worse than the jokes about finding your cars on bricks, etc.? It's all ****e and has been for a long time, KK just likes to fuel it for the brain-dead response he knows he will get.

"His eyes make him "certain not only are the lights not on, there is definitely nobody at home", adding: "I get a similar feeling when seeing a gorilla at the zoo."

Would that be seen as implied racism if it were written about Emile Heskey?
If so wouldn't you expect a journalist to be careful there was no chance of racial implications before using the same remark against any player??

Are we supposed to believe an experienced journalist with a history of controversial articles was as naïve as a child?

The harder you try to attribute racism to those words, the more your thinking becomes tainted.

If it was written about Emile Heskey without doubt it would be seen as racism, the question is how far back do we now need to check. See the point by DMD

The point is he wouldn't have written it about Heskey and wouldn't have done if he had known about Barkley's antecedents.
Is a journalist supposed to know about every players' grandparents?

    Naah, it's alright Dutch.

It's just a metaphor. No harm done. They were never actually saying Peter looked like a monkey, more that his facial characteristics are similarly comparable to the active state of monkey-facedness. If a monkey were Peter Reid then it would be an experience similar to look at as to be a monkey looking in its self-reflective post-conscious awareness of its own state of front of headed being.

    Thought everyone knew that!

    Aww, **** it.

I've just realised. It's because he looks like a monkey isn't it?

Fair point, but remember this bloke was an ex-editor of the Sun at a time when it was most under fire.
Even Donald Trump would have done a bit of research before attributing those comparisons in print, but for some reason people prefer to think Mackenzie was totally naive and oblivious to the effect his article could have.

Anyone who thinks those comments are racist need to get a life and stop stoking the fire of racial divide - it's those kind of people who are the intolerant in society, filled with hatred because they can't accept that the world is full of people with different views and opinions and won't allow freedom of speech unless it conforms with their narrow view of the world

Best article I've read about this is here:

Pretty much sums up how I feel about that odious twat, and the general state of all our tabloids in the UK too.

They don't give a **** about selling newspapers, its all about clickbait and page views online.

Integrity, actual journalism, that's long gone.

How do you know it isn't racism? Do you believe everything (anything?!) Kelvin MacKenzie says?

Racist or not, comparing someone to a gorilla in public print is ****ing despicable. MacKenzie is a ****ing disgrace to his profession.

'Nothing'? Really? If Ross Barkley was my son and some **** suggested he was as thick as a gorilla, alongside the photo they printed, I would've burnt the ****'s house down.

My, my, what a surprise. The only thing Sharon has to say on the matter is to complain about someone being accused of racism...
