Shockingly disgraceful "journalism" from Kelvin MacKenzie, i'm not Barkley's biggest fan but still... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39601728
Wow, if that was wrote by someone who had been drinking, on a footy forum I'd be a little shocked.......oh sorry its in the Sun. No further comment.
I don't see what all the hyperbole is all about. Don't get me wrong, it's a **** article and pretty demeaning. People talk about reducing bullying in schools, stuff like this in the papers makes it acceptable for people to be rude to one another for no reason. But the word racist is being thrown around as well?? He likened the guy to a gorilla in a non racial context. The world needs to get a grip, this bollocks making headlines and being reported to police is utterly ridiculous. Next time someone is rude to me, or demeaning, I'm going to report it to the police, let's waste their already dwindling resources. Same goes for the Tesco advert.
I'm no defender of good ol' Kelvin, but... I've watched Barkley over several years alternating between sublime and thuggish football. I've seen him on TV, I've seen him live. To me he's always just been a typical scouser. It never, not once, occurred to me that he might be anything other than a typical example of the mongrel tribe we call British. You could have knocked me down with a feather when I read (yesterday) that he has Nigerian ancestry. By all means call me stupid for not knowing but why would I? I could easily have called him a gorilla in utter innocence. Vin P.S. I'm also in no way defending the general bullying tone that newspaper columnists somehow use unpunished (it's one of the reasons I don't read the papers) but this furore is specifically about a racial slur.
Think the article was offensive but only in an overdone rude way. I got glared at during a match because I looked at a large man in a gorilla mask and likened him to one of our black players in the past. The reason was because he was large and fierce....I never considered the idea of likening a black man to a missing link or our ape cousins because my mind never works that way. Sadly I only worked out why I was being glared at after the game...again because my mind doesn't move in a racist way. And I too never knew Barkley was mixed race....just like I never knew Ryan Giggs was. A person's race is not the first thing I think of. Still a rude article, but I doubt the writer would have used the gorilla word if he had any idea either.
Racist or not, to take a pop at Scousers at this particular time, considering what he did 28 years ago, shows that the man has no scruples whatsoever. He personifies the Murdoch era perfectly.
Yeah I didn't call him a **** because I thought it was racist but because I think he's a ****. Brilliant timing as well like you say...
Taking that to its logical extreme, that would suggest that scousers are above any criticism by the Sun. On that basis, I hope no-one from Liverpool ever says a bad word about Turin. Vin
