Well yeah, I imagine there are a lot of things that were allowed back then that aren't now, if somebody is chanting something inappropriate, it wants sorting.

Inappropriate. That catch all weasel word used to silence or stop anything someone doesn't approve of but has no real reason for doing so.

I think if you eliminated the 'inappropriate' stuff you'd be left with TIGERS TIGERS RA RA RA and that's about it.

So something racist or homophobic is alright provided nobody shows any immediate concern?

    I don't know, I wasn't there, that's why I was asking.

A lot of firm vs firm fighting is predetermined, it's how they avoid police interference.

Wasn't really that stupid, was it? What's stupid is acting like a tit over a perfectly reasonable line of questioning.

If only all history was passed on that way.

"So what was the maiden voyage of the Marie Rose like?"

"You weren't there, so I couldn't possibly explain it to you. We went through this when you asked me about the Big Bang."

Fantastic stuff and a real education for those of us only aware of a very different connotation of the term "City Psychos". The first time I can recall hearing the term used was when someone purported to be the "Psychos" bus driver accosted Simon Gray outside Elland Road at the 1980 Blyth Spartans cup-tie and accused him of having "shopped him" for drink-driving :emoticon-0102-bigsm

The numbers quoted as travelling away with City is also something of an eye opener given the figure that was rumoured/reported to have travelled to "The Battle of Bramall Lane" at the start of the same decade. So presumably City's away following tailed off in tandem with the club's slump in fortunes as the 70s progressed? Some of the older lads on our trips in the 1980s would reminisce about being vastly outnumbered on the terraces at Hillsborough and the like. It certainly made me glad I started going away when I did, as most City followings during the 1980s were respectable enough - so much so that the only time I felt really exposed was Scotland v England at Hampden in 1985 :emoticon-0107-sweat

My days were late 60s to 72. Never looked for trouble but it usually found us.

Your mention of the skinheads made me laugh (I ****ing loathed them). Gang of about 12-15 bigging it up at the Boulevard got their arse kicked when the plod went for a tactical stroll.
It was an FC game. To be fair they put up a spirited fight for about 20 seconds. They were trapped in Thruppenny with nowhere to go, the pitch not an option as the players had their cards marked; great sideshow! <laugh>

Don't ask me for what match as that was when I started investing memory loss potions.<cheers>

'Your going down with your trawlers' was a popular chant in the mid 70's. Don't remember many away fans getting life bans for chanting it or any locals suffering etc etc etc because of. We just gave them something as stinging back. It was called 'terrace banter' Now it involves a solicitor and the Chief of Police and probably someone looking for compensation for hurt feelings.

All good things must come to an end, Bernard Manning must be turning in his grave...

Bernard Manning made a good living out his humour which at the time was very popular. Not so now, but that just shows how things change. Doesn't detract from my post because that it what happened and no-one batted an eye lid.

In my eyes, there's a difference between terrace abuse and / or humour and a comedian on tv. Other than racism or hate-filled homophobia I don't think people should be banned for something that they sing on a football terrace, even if it is ****ty as hell. And I dont include "does your boyfriend know you're here?" in that. That's not hate-filled, it's just stupid, puerile and pathetic.

Take those Scousers or Mancs signing about Munich or Hillsborough, it makes them look ****ing pathetic twats in my eyes but banning orders? Come off it. The reaction from DQPR fans to that chant in bad taste was massively over the ****ing top, the fannies them.

But putting someone on telly spouting hate in the guise of comedy is, thankfully, a thing of a bygone age.

How, in the pre social media days, would anyone with a modicum of sense think people got in touch to arrange predetermined dust ups?

Actually, a lot of the Brighton fans were laughing at the does your boyfriend know you're here chant. It wasn't the same as people singing about tragedies like Munich or Hillsborough.

Exactly. There's nothing hate-filled about it, it's just stupid and meant in jest so the idea of getting banned for it is ridiculous.
