Almost all of these people apparently have a history of GBH and crime rather than being mentally unstable. One expert summed them up as 'losers'. Leaves them open to outside influences.

If you have a history of GBH somethings not quite firing right in your head!

These people seem to use stolen vehicles and not their own. I believe the technology already exists whereby you can disable a stolen car by satellite. I expect vehicle tracking and disabling will soon be fitted as standard.

Yes, being allowed to play cricket is obviously more important than being punished for beating someone up and trying to poison them. Don't tell me, the original judge was a middle aged or older, upper class, white man...

So let me get this right. This guy beats his wife around with a cricket bat and forces her to drink bleach [bleach, ffs] and originally gets off with it because of some technicality.?

I'm not a violent man myself, but I do have a deeply buried temper which I reserve only for bullies these days, and then it still takes some. That bloke would have been trying to drink bleach while also attempting to swallow the cricket bat. I'd play baseball with his body with a Louisville Slugger. And yes, I know it would solve nothing, but it might just get one back for those people who get picked on.

Does it say whether the woman is properly OK.?

No, it wasn't a technicality. The man said that he was about to sign a contract with (I think) Leicestershire Cricket Club so the judge gave him a suspended sentence so that he could go play cricket. The club have now said that there was no contract and didn't know this man so he's finally ended up in jail, though reading some of the reports it's more because the judiciary is upset at being lied to than the fact that this man is a wife-beating bastard.

Thanks for the help with the bird identification. It was not a Red Kite but the Harris Hawk option is interesting albeit I think this bird was larger. It has been suggested that this might have been a Marsh Harrier but I cannot recall seeing any raptors in Southampton although there are plenty of species to be seen outside of Southampton.

FWIiW Buzzard are the Uk's most numerous raptor and outnumber kestrels.

I believe that a Black Kite has been potentially observed in Totton this week - better know by their more familiar name of a Sh/te Hawk.

Yes, you mentioned you wouldn't be able to get to the Palace match. Sweden wasn't it.? Fancy staying away for the run-in.? ;)

I've had pretty damn convincing man-flu all week. Not proper flu which we know puts you in bed for two-three weeks and you may even have a brush with death if it's a real bad 'un, but the feverish cold type, with racking cough, that stops you from doing absolutely anything but endlessly type at a keyboard.

That's my week. So behind in my work. Bank won't be happy. I must be coming out of it though as I fixed a smartphone that's been lying around, out of sheer boredom, about half an hour ago. Proper stuff too. Total dismantle and some soldering. I've got one of those hats with a light and plug-in lenses. Makes it much easier. No, scrub that - it makes it possible. :)

FFS.! How much does a bloke have to beat his partner then to go directly to jail without passing Go and collecting £200.? And let's not forget the bleach, which is far worse anyway.

He also threatened to kill her, but he was spared jail because his wife wasn't vulnerable because she had higher education and a circle of friends. I'm not sure how your education protects you from a cricket bat and bleach poured into your mouth.

    Phwoar!
    Easy there Tiger.

Actually I'm just jealous of someone who can solder at that level, it would be a fused mass of plastic and metal with old fat fingers here.

    So am I. <laugh>

I'm sure you could do it, as you're an IT bloke you won't be too intimidated by componentry, although I must admit that smartphone interiors make laptops look positively huge, and I'm not overkeen on them either. Usually I just hold myself together and do it. The shaky hands come afterwards. I used to be completely crap at it, but there's no doubt that it becomes possible with the right equipment. Plus having an online guide to dismantling the particular phone is a big boost, just in case I get careless and forget. If you're short on one thing though, just forget it. It'll be a guaranteed **** up. But there's no trick or superb skill, I can assure you.

I did once get over confident and started whistling, which promptly blew the components away. That was a mistake I never made again. <laugh>
