It's mental. If it's for encroachment it's an absolute joke.

If a player delays his run up, or faints as if to kick and then delays for a second, then it's a free kick and no re-taken pen. But when that happens the ref is meant to book the penalty taker. No other offense should result in anything other than a re-taken penalty.

From the replay on SSN, he didn't delay, just put it in.can't see Toon players encroaching, but Burton players did. Farce.

Did he stop or slow down at any point in his run up?

I hate this not being on a stream

I'd never even heard about the wrong player kicking the ball changing from a re-taken pen. But can't believe anyone would do that these days.

From a photo on the BBC, Gayle was in the area (which happens with a million penalties each month) by a yard and so could, just about, allow a retake. He should then talk to Gayle and explain, talk to the players and explain, then let Ritchie take it again. This fcking cheating is beyond the pale. And I tell you something else - get on Google and search for Keith Stroud Idiot or Keith Stroud Complaints and see the catalogue of clubs with issues.....EXCEPT BRIGHTON!!! Who he referees around once a month.

Just looked at the FIFA rules and it isn't even illegal to feint. It's only illegal if the referee decides it is also unsporting.

Apparently if a player misses the pen then you give a free kick for encroachment - but if he scores it is re-taken. Wonder if the ref got confused between those two?

"Keith Paul Stroud (born 12 August 1969[1]) is a professional Englishfootball referee who officiates in the Football League and Premier League. Most famous for making a right royal mistake between Newcastle Utd vs Burton Albion by not knowing the correct rules on a penalty retake."

I do not know why people like that aren't just sacked. Instantly down to Nationals. The fact we still have these amateurish tw@ts in the middle of important fixtures is, for me, just another indication of how outdated and inept the FA is.

This **** ref shouldn't be allowed to ref another match for two months. If we lose, a whole year.

Plus - how long was the game held up for at the pen? No way that much was added on at the end.

There was at least 8 minutes. He added on 3. Now they in the press box, according to BBC, claim there was a FOUL as Ritchie stepped forward.

Haven't been this miffed since Tiote's thunderbolt was wiped out against Man City.

Maybe this was why the Newcastle penalty was ruled out? The debate will go on and on...

Disallowed penalty update: Common opinion in the press box is that a there was a foul on the edge of the box as Ritchie stepped up #brewers

    8:27 PM - 5 Apr 2017

    ---------

The ball isn't in play until the ball is kicked. And wasn't the free-kick taken from the penalty spot according to the commentators, rather than from where the foul took place? Plus a foul is a direct free kick and not an indirect free-kick. Total bollocks all round.
