Are all the pavers in cenotaph towards Stanley's brasserie new?? Cos loads of them are broken and sticking up
If you mean just opposite the Cenotaph I think they are still the old pavers and as far as I am away are not due for replacement, and yes they are a danger. Likewise the same thing up near to the KCom headquarters, the ones on the opposite side of the road, Ebeneezer Morley way, are new.
Who were the first 'Punk band anyway'? I've read it was the New York Dolls. Surely it was the Pistols?
The first UK punk release was New Rose by The Damned which just pipped Anarchy in the UK, but the Pistols were certainly gigging before The Damned and Joe Strummer was still in the 101'erson the same bill in late 1975 or early 1976. Arguable about who was the first USA influence, but these are all candidates: MC5, Velvet Underground, The Stooges,, the NY Dolls, Richard Hell's incarnation of Television (with tom Verlaine) and then those relative latecomers The Ramones. Actually some UK sprinkling of influence could be said to have come from The Pink Fairies and John Lydon in a desert island disc selection cited Neu and Van der Graf Generator amongst others. Each pair of ears hear what they they are perceiving man!
An excellent reply Les, thank you. We're still not sure then. Maybe I should rephrase? Which band first called themselves a 'Punk' band?
Pistols for me, at least punk as we know it. The yanks would no doubt claim New York Dolls, Suicide and The Ramones, but that had none of the attitude that came out of London in 76.
Electric Eels one that slipped my memory, but punky particularly on 'Agitated'. From 1975. Late 1975 saw the arrival of the american fanzine 'Punk' which was the first appropriation of word to describe this aggressive music. Q. Is there any advance on Grosicki as our most punky looking player?
I don't think the 'yanks' claim it at all, I think the whole music listening universe does. Cos it's FACT.
All of those American bands were punk-light, they had no relevance to most in the UK Punk scene, were you even around at the time?
