But that's alright. They may be faceless bureaucrats but they're British faceless bureaucrats

    Corrected, thanks.

One of mine? Do think I'm a member of a political party?

Not necessarily. But you do seem to approve of most of the policies of the Conservatives so assumption on my part. Am I wrong?

My political views seem to fall centre right for sure, but I'm not, nor have I ever been a member of any political party and I haven't always voted Tory.

As tiresome as the 40-odd years of Eurosceptics moaning and preying that the EU would fail?

Up unto we leave EU regulations are already part of our law and rules our way of life. by incorporating them into UK law in two years it will be easier to delete the one we want to be rid of and keep the ones we want.

It's going to go on for a lot longer than two years Col. Probably for the rest of my lifetime. Any bad news will be attributed to leaving the EU, no matter how skimpy the connection. Even I will get sick of it. Mind you I've had more than 25 years of Redwood, Cash, Farage and their ilk whining on and fake news stories about straight bananas, so now we'll have Farron, Heseltine, Clarke etc on the same trip.

On the plus side it will pretty easy to measure how things are going after we leave:
    - if economic growth is the same or better than EU average, or if we want a high bar, Germany (as we should if we are talking the nation up)
    - if unemployment is the same or lower than EU average/Germany
    - if exports to EU countries continue to grow at current rates (who cares about imports)
    - if inflation is at or around the 2% target
    - if net immigration from the EU has fallen by tens of thousands (the government won't put a target on it, so I won't be specific)

Fair metrics? Except for immigration we have been outperforming the EU on these in recent years (but of course we have been in the EU too). Obviously not only being in or out of the EU has an impact on them, but I think they show 'general wellbeing' in comparison to the people we want a 'deep and special partnership' with, which is what really matters, and the immigration stuff was obviously central to a lot of votes. And of course the measures need to be taken over time, not just 30 March 2019. Afraid I can't think of anything measurable to reflect how happy people are with 'taking back control', sovereignty etc.

How "very tiresome" for you. What do you reckon the Brit pensioners call the 11% meltdown of their pensions since the vote if they live in Euro lands, or the 17% meltdown if they live in USD dominated lands since the vote? It happened.

I'll be backing Brexit with the same amount of gusto and effort IDS, Farage, Davis et al put into make the UK work in the EU in the last 40 years.

on a serious note, let's see what actually comes out of negotiations. The financial institutions and car makers will be doing the same - we'll know soon enough if it's a disaster.

I'll never stop talking up my country, Col. It's fair, open-minded, generous and tolerant. Issues are discussed and resolved in a civil way. Facts are used to support opinions.

It's a bit hard to find at the moment, but give it time...

AS my old mate said on CCN. loads of press playing on 'project fear' and a few loud voices coming out of the EU but as soon as they realize the sums of money involved they will be ringing us for a decent deal. What he says all the way,
ps...Tim Farron is a wet muppet

The last point made by Len was totally correct.....crack down on tax avoidance and tax evasion by the corporates and the super-rich....then just maybe there might be a darn sight more to pay for the NHS.

I read an interesting article that said that tax evasion and the black economy cost about 8 times as much as tax avoidance (12bn compared to about 1.5bn) but none of the parties had any interest in tackling it because it affects a much larger number of people than avoidance, making it a potential vote loser.

It was written by a tax accountant though and so I think there was a bias towards self preservation albeit with some interesting points behind it.

Jean Claude Junket has been making 'threats' since before the Referendum, saying the deal would be so punitive to the UK that no other country would dare leave the EU. Mother Theresa makes perfectly understandable riposte and they all throw their toys out the pram, what should we do? Just roll over and let them tickle our belly? Get real, there are high stakes and we have to play as dirty as they will, perhaps that 'threat' will make some in the EU realise they have just as much to lose if they don't play reasonably...

Premier League chairmen have urged the government to exempt EU footballers from any post Brexit immigration controls.

    **** off.

If a lot of them end up unemployed they can always turn to non violent crime. 57% of reported burglaries are not even investigated in Manchester (49% in the Met). Apparently if there is no CCTV evidence they don't bother. Figures rise to over 70% for stuff like pick pocketing, nicking bikes and criminal damage. So if you are a competent petty criminal there's a secure living to be made.

    You're right.

I don't have any issue with either side making positional statements prior to starting negotiations. I've done enough negotiating myself to know this is just posturing for the voters and will all be forgotten as soon as the work around the table begins. As you say, both sides have things to lose if this isn't done right. I don't think the EU has as much to lose as we do, but enough that they will want to minimise any losses - as I hope we also will.

What I don't like is the way some people in the media (real and social) are using this pre-negotiation posturing as an excuse to blow dog whistles and stir up anger amongst decent people. We all need clear heads now, not hot ones.
