It was Billy's van mate and if I remember correctly, Billy's van never moved and stood outside his house and if it was shut you just knocked on his door and he would get you what you wanted. Briggsy's van used to tour the estate but there was also another one as well. Joe's van, who also had a fruit and veg shop in Red House and his van toured from Red House to TEF. He used to have a Minor Bird in his shop and it could talk if I remember and my mother worked in the shop for a while as well. Amazing that I can't remember what I did last night, but I can remember all this daft stuff in great detail. And then you used to Have Fella's ice cream van come round the estate as well. We used to have a plank of wood with a nail in it and when he got to the next street to ours we'd shove it under his front wheel while he was busy serving ice creams. As soon as he drove off he got a flat tyre, obviously no mobiles around then so he had to walk to the nearest phone box and we used that to break into his van and loot it.
Aye. Dandelion & burdock, sarsaparilla & pineappleade. We used to get to keep the deposit money from the empty bottles. Happy days, we didn't have a care in the world.
Sykes pop van was our first. They had skinnier bottles. Alpine followed a few years later and had bigger bottles with a sort of rubber suction top.
When I was a kid there was a bloke at the bottom of our street that used to drive the tankers for Vaux's and his coal house was full to the rafters with pop and beer and he always shared it out with the kids in the street and used to give me a couple of bottles of beer for my old fella. Great times mate.
Yes, they had a rubber seal inside the plastic cap. It was supposed to stop the pop going flat but never really worked.
Not Sunderland I know but can any of you remember Lambton Lion Park? I used to love going there as a bairn. Watching the baboons pull the wipers & aerials off peoples cars.
Sykes and Villla. Was a sad chant whem playing villa. Sykes on better than villa. Poor twats must have thought wtf
Aye I do mate, never ever went in to see the animals but I once went to see the GB Rally there, brilliant weekend if you're a petrol head like me.
CAn anyone remember the old Ginger Ale ceramic bottles with the rubber cork in them? would love to get my hands on one now.
We used to climb over the back of the local off-licence and help ourselves to a few of the syphon bottles. The deposits were a lot bigger than the other bottles
Time Team should be dug up they're all frigging ancient now. Did you ever see when they did Hylton Castle?
Aye I remember that. I was just relieved they all got away alive Seem to recall some cheap digging equipment being hawked around the pubs afterwards though
I haven't been through Hylton Castle for years, what pubs are left now? is the Cauld Lad still there? Probably flattened now like just like the Slipway and Schooner at TEF.
