As a kid there was a real excitement and flair with international tournaments. The world cups of 78, 82, 86 and 90 were exceptional. If you ever get to see any documentaries which go through the highlights of those, you'll see just how magical they were. Then 1994 happened and it's just never been the same. U.S.A ruined the WC. I went to Germany 2006 and whilst there was a real buzz about the place, the football just didnt measure up to those of the 70's and 80's tournaments.
The last interesting international tournament which came close to the atmosphere of those earlier tournaments was Euros 2004. The rest have been **** quite frankly.

Some truth in that I suspect. I'm too young to recall the 70s and 80s but tournament in the 90s were great.

I remember as a kid Euro 1996 - everyone was excited, Three Lions was on every radio station and tape player in the country.

People were buying shirts. Shearer was the man and the team were good. Players like David Seamen, Sherringham and Darren Anderton!

Distinctly remember being in a mini bus on a cub camp and everyone singing 3 lions.

    Was great!

    We had good players.

For me I think when Portugal kept knocking us out by cheating was the last time I've enjoyed one. 2006?

Struggling to think of the last time I enjoyed an international tournament.
I was 7 during Italia 90, and it was okay, I remember watching us beat Cameroon in the QF, but I was 7, so wasn't that invested in it.
I was about 13 during Euro 96, and i remember enjoying that one quite a lot.
I think France 98 was the last world cup I enjoyed. We had just signed Desailly and i remember being excited that he had been immense in that tournament and had won the world cup with Frank Leboeuf next to him, so we in essence had the world cup winning CB partnership (even though Lebeouf only played because Laurent Blanc was injured or suspended, cant remember which).

I have literally no memory of Euro 2000 or WC 2002, not sure what happened there, I was just sick of it. Ever since then, England football team has meant nothing to me.

Italy 1990 is the one we should have won. Germany got lucky against us and then of course came the penalties!...

Fast forward 6 years....same ****ing result!...

That was 1970. 1974 we didn't make it through qualification.

<laugh> Actually, that's the first time I've ever watched him play and not wanted to punch him. Perhaps it's the blue shirt...

    Nobody did. England lost.
Largely because Gary Cahill moved out of the way of Podolski's shot, because he's a ponce.

    Ahem!...

Dele Alli (attacking midfield) 8 MAN OF THE MATCH

England's stand-out performer although marred his otherwise excellent display by missing a great first-half chance. A genuine international performer.
