I just don't think there was enough contact, especially considering the ball was nowhere near him. Ah well, if we got away with one so did they and I'd argue Alli's second one was a bit soft too. Not a great second half from an attacking sense but pleased with the defensive shift, we really shut them out after they got one back. Not the prettiest but it's still 3 points. Davies Motm for me, another great performance from him.
Sometimes, you've got to win ugly. Isn't that what all the media ex-'Pool and ex-United pundits tell us when either 'Pool and United cling on to scrape a win?
Wouldn't go that far, but he's not let us down by any means. Difficult to come up with a MOTM however as most only played for 45 mins!!
I thought he covered the flank at both ends very well and made a lot of good runs. The rest of the midfield and attack faded in the second half, he was the only one who didn't.
To be honest, that IMHO is said more to comfort Jamie Carragher when he is on the pundit panel with Thierry Henry.
Lloris (played his usual magnificent part) Dier. (good game played well) Alderweireld (impressive) Vertonghen (stupendous) Walker (not at his best, but did Ok) Wanyama (awesome) Dembélé (majestic) Davies (big improvement, good game) Eriksen (very good, but lost his edge later on) Alli (super, but ran out of steam) Son (played well-covered a lot ground) Pochettino is worthy of recognition and a **** load of praise.
Great 1st half performance but they were the better team in 2nd half. We dug in well and really fought hard for the win. Very happy...a win is all that matters at this point in the season imho Coys
i think Toby should have intercepted the cross for their goal...he kind of hopped over it whilst swiping at thin air. Dembele is impressive, a Bison...i just think he needs to have more purpose with his final decisions be it a shot or forward pass.
I thought that Lloris actually had a bit of a dodgy game, by his standards. He wasn't bad, but his distribution was wayward and he made some strange decisions, at times. Didn't have many saves to make (2, maybe), though he couldn't be blamed for the goal.
Toby doesn't get much wrong. It was good play, to be fair, by their man that led to the cross. Their goal came at a time just as we were losing concentration. Fair play to them I'd say. If Dembele added a bit more forward passing to his game and a few goals, every now a then, he'd be up there with the greats.
I think one of the reasons that the second half fell to pieces was partly because Son started. I'm not blaming his performance today, as I thought he actually played really well in the first half especially. However, that period where we'd normally bring him on to add some pace and energy in the second half didn't happen, because he'd started the game and was knackered from chasing and pressing for the entire first half. As NSIS said, saints just played the ball comfortable around the back 4 before mounting an attack, because Son had become tired an wasn't as effective. Janssen should have had much longer, and if he had come into the game on about 60mins, I don't think we'd have seen so much possession with Southampton. He's playing really well, and as others have said, he deserves a start now to help us with our shape and tactics throughout the game.
And he almost threw the ball into his own net!! Great keeper, but his fannying around drives me mad and his distribution is not good enough. Thought Forster looked very impressive and certainly no fannying!!
Davis kicks Tadic in the balls in the area, no foul, no yellow card, no red card, no penalty. Any comments?
Bit of a drab match to be fair, not really much to talk about on it if truth be told. Great goal from Eriksen. Average penalty from Dele. Sloppy goal to concede (Toby at fault, should've cleared. A very rare mistake from him). Stepped of the gas in the second half. Winks added a bit of bite when he came on and Janssen came on and drew a number of fouls, which as weird as it may sound, was impressive and crucial at a time where we needed to keep the ball up their end of the pitch. 3 points though, always important when you've not been at your best. Well done lads
I only saw the last 20 minutes but Wanyama was absolutely brilliant yet again. I hope we have a 150 Million buy out clause in his contract because one of the F-Off money bags clubs will be along sooner rather than later.
I was quite impressed with the match. The Spurs of a few years ago would have easily lost this game. It's pretty impressive that we are no longer losing games as regularly as we used to.
I wasn't impressed, as there are still many moments where I am having kittens expecting yet another <standard> to occur. It is a sign of progression that although some of us expect the <standard>s to come, they are a lot more infrequent. The next big step is for the players to hold it together at the vital moments (unlike the final third of the season in 2012 and 2013, the final 3 games of 2016 etc) .
