I was in a locals bar up in the Andulucian hills and saw a group of Spanish working guys having a Saturday afternoon session. They were ordering round after round of Tio Pepe.

 

Not in the C.O.C year but near enough and something I'd like to see but not until 2018 although you can book 24th March this year.

Award-winning West End musical Jersey Boys is heading to Hull New Theatre.

Audience members can expect hits such as Sherry, Walk Like A Man and 1963, because Jersey Boys is the remarkable true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and their rise to stardom from the wrong side of the tracks. The four boys from New Jersey became one of the most successful bands in pop history, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they turned 30. Due to overwhelming public demand, the producers of this hit musical have announced a second UK and Ireland tour, which includes dates at Hull New Theatre in 2018, after its nine-year run in London comes to an end this month. The show is packed with their hits, including Beggin', Sherry, Walk Like A Man, December, 1963 (Oh What a Night), Big Girls Don't Cry, My Eyes Adored You, Let's Hang On (To What We've Got), Bye Bye Baby, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Working My Way Back to You, Fallen Angel, Rag Doll and Who Loves You.

Winner of Broadway's Tony, London's Olivier and Australia's Helpmann Awards for Best New Musical, Jersey Boys has collected a total of 57 major awards worldwide and has been seen by more than 24 million people across the globe. The US National Tour and UK and Ireland Tour production is staged by the entire original Broadway creative team, led by director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo. Scenic design is by Klara Zieglerova, costume design by Jess Goldstein, lighting by Howell Binkley, sound by Steve Canyon Kennedy and projection design by Michael Clark. The orchestrations are by Steve Orich and the music supervision and vocal arrangements by Ron Melrose. The UK & Ireland Tour of Jersey Boys is produced by Dodger Theatricals and Ambassador Theatre Group, with Joseph J Grano, Pelican Group, Latitute Link and Rick Steiner. Always liked the Four Seasons back in the day. Probably the biggest selling band until the Beatles came along.
Will be worth seeing to hear some great songs. Only trouble is no one can be another Frankley Valli.
Talking of great songs, Bob Gaudio of the Four Seasons will not be know to a lot of younger people but he wrote a host of great songs, far more than a lot of more well known song writers.

proper spit and sawdust type place. they write your tab in chalk on the bar.

 

In '65 I used to eat in a workers' caff, off Las Ramblas, in Barcelona. The cooking area was in the middle of the room, the tables all around the walls. Lunchtime would fill up with workers building the Metro. Shouting and red wine, bowls of chips and (kinda) tapas.

Memories.

 

Imagine trying to do that in a bar in this country. Or marking your drinks on the beer mat as they do in some countries.
Even 40 years ago someone in Amsterdam told me you could tell the drinking places the Brits went in as they were the ones with bars across the toilet windows.

They were iron bars. Often with some sort of mesh on.

Put drinking places instead of bars spas not to cause confusion. Doesn't seem to have worked.

 

We rubbed the chalk off, it was too tempting to leave it alone.

 

I just googled 'why are pub counters called bars' and it was as obvious as you'd expect. It's a synecdoche.

 

What are all the baskets for

The baskets are for the napkins you use, but no one uses them. They throw them on the floor. The better the bar the more napkins on the floor.
