I still don't get how they are meant to self clean surely the only way to clean them is to empty out give a good scrub with cleaning products, rinse, empty and then refill.

I have friends who have them and they just seem to have a mass of different chemicals to add

I would post on here what goes on but there are too many old folk on here and for their health I won't! Don't want to be responsible for high blood pressure going up!

They are really good after a days skiing so most of the hotels in Banff will have at least one.
They can cost a lot of money depending how big they are and the type of jets they have, I was in one a few years ago and it had its own sound system, speakers and disco lights!
They can become expensive to maintain as people have them sitting for months without using them and the pumps always seem to need changing, they can also add about $100 to your heating bill a month

Most of my family have LazySpa pools, inflatable and cheap. We would not spend big money on one. In fact for me a perfect hot tub is simply that, water jets and lights are a waste.
We sit in the hot tub with the heat at 40 degrees and just relax. I normally turn the pump off as well.
It used to cost us between 50 amd 80 pence a day, if we kept the heat high.

I just find the whole ****ing thing weird. I've got a mate who's always posting pictures on Facebook of him and his Mrs in their hot tub, with friends, their kids, even his mum and dad. You're in a ****ing bath, in the garden, in February, with your mum and dad. ****ing lost on me!

Ahh... the difference for us is that we sit in the hot tub on a night, have a drink and chat under the stars. Its not for everyone, but its along the same lines as having a bbq. Why bother with a bbq when you can cook in the kitchen.

Playing with fire is far more fun than having a bath.

Any public swimming space is the same.

Can't go in a swimming pool since years ago I had to do pool training for sub aqua diving.

Swimming around with a face mask on in a pool allows you see with startling clarity what's floating in that chemically treated and filtered water.

Plasters, hairs, mucus, scabs and worse. Much worse.

Also remember in the first year of marriage the missus telling me she'd left bath water in for me.

Me: why'd I want to soak in your piss?
Wife: who wees in the bath over 3 years old?
    Me....
    Wife....
    Me....
    Wife: dirty bastard
Me: you're the one who uses the flannel on your face...
Wife: where else...ffs dirty bastard! Leave my flannel alone!

I'll own up: we have one. It was the missus idea, she liked the one her sister has. We do us it a lot, nice to relax in with a beer after work. It's one of the smallest ones (4-seater) but fits the space we had for it almost perfectly.

The important thing is regularly checking the water condition (making sure the PH level is correct, and there is sufficient bromine). Cleaning the filters regularly is also essential. Do that, and there is little to no trouble with the water cleanliness. We did have to drain it and refill a couple of times after junior has had some of his smelly mates over. That takes about a day. They are well insulated so the running costs aren't too bad to keep the temperature up. Chemicals & filters are the other regular costs. We replaced the lid once.
