Newcastle fans are their own worst enemies sometimes I'm sure.

Marveaux - A lot of people named him as the top class winger we should be looking to get, and when it looked like he was on his way to Liverpool, a lot of people were very pissed off as we had missed out a bargain.

However, now he's signed for us, some people seem to have forgotten all that and barely factored him into the new strength we've gained by having him in the squad. In fact, some people aren't even sure whether to start him or Jonas.

Ba - While we were on the hunt for strikers, a lot of people said they'd be happy with Ba, he'd be a superb free signing, and that we'd never get him in a million years. Now we have him, a lot of people seem unconfident of his abilities and don't think he'll be that prolific.

This is just two examples. Newcastle fans tend to start out optimistic, but gradually go down a pessimistic route as time goes by. Why do you think that is? Are we sub-consciously protecting ourselves by not getting our hopes up?

You're exactly right. Ba doesnt score in pre season and he's suddenly a "**** Ameobi". It's ****ing pathetic.

I'd love it if we signed Messi...

...but he'd probably end up getting injured or not adapting to English football. Bloody waste of money if you ask me! Sack the board!!! <grr>

Nail firmly on the head there like. No matter what happens on and off the pitch nothing is good enough for some people.

Ba was amazing in an extremely poor West Ham team in the second half of last season and we've signed some fantastic quick midfielders, which while unproven in the Premiership look extremely promising for the new season when they gel.

I just hope the crowd get behind the lads tomorrow and we create a good atmosphere, because some of the negative reactions in the home crowds during the season we went down contributed to our downfall by distracting the players and giving the southern based media more ammunition to use against us.

We've got to look at the positives and give these players a chance, but I can already see anti Ashley chants within 10 minutes of the Arsenal game and the circus will continue as the media pick us apart

I'm just waiting for Pieters to sign and for people to point out he's not as good as Enrique. <doh>

Marveaux or Jonas isn't a clear cut choice though, given that probably the majority of us haven't seen Marveaux play.

I remember before all the Ba speculation a lot of us were going on about how we'd LOVE to sign Ba and that we should definitely go in for him as he'd be an excellent striker to have and looked fantastic for West Ham. We were also dreaming about Samba at the same time, and saying these were purely fan speculation and were never going to happen. Then we actually got Ba, ON A FREE! And I was over the moon. And I still am.

Ba is a fantastic signing and I am more than pleased that we have him. It's just annoying that everyone else is going on about "where's our striker then? We still haven't signed a striker!!" I know that we're after more than just one new striker but everyone does seem to be forgetting about Ba!

And I agree, now that he's our player we're picking all the faults with him, rather than before when he was a West Ham player and we were picking out all the good things about him. It's like we're doing the opposite of what normal fans do!

    I'm glad he's gone.

I super glued caterpillars to my eye brows last night as recommended for the acid test and the missus was insatiable.

At least Pieters hasn't got prominent eye brows so I can watch the match without her salivating next to me.

Can't speak for others but I've been pretty consistent with my opinions on both. I said I'd like both to come in and thought both would make good squad fillers on free transfers. I didn't see either as first choice, and saw them both as having well documented injury problems. I still see it the same, they were good squad signings but neither would start for me. Ba may have to with our main striker signing now looking increasingly unlikely. We have to expect him to miss a lot of games given his chronic knee problem. With Marveaux I think we need to be patient. He is classy but is also very lightweight and has not played football for 9 months before joining us. He's had a lot of operations on the same injury to his groin in 2 or 3 years before that. It will take him a while to adapt due to his style of play and physique, and it may take him a while to get his level back. Patience is the key. Jonas is a very good player and would still be my first choice winger. Good signings for me as long as you don't place too much reliance on them because of their fitness problems.
