Also whether you remember Ali very well or not, doesn't really have much bearing on a debate It's all on tape, we all have tape players.
Interesting Vice article https://sports.vice.com/en_uk/article/a-brutally-honest-look-at-mike-tyson-versus-muhammad-ali
We'll have to agree to disagree. Ali, unfortunately, lost many of his best years to the US Gvt. But in his prime he was literally untouchable. Having seen both, I'm firmly convinced that the Ali of his pre ban days would have easily taken care of a slugger, like Tyson.
True, but Tyson in his prime was also untouchable. I know people will always disagree on this and I get that. Would have been an immense fight though.
Ali for me .. Sonny Liston was supposed to destroy him, Joe Frazier was supposed to destroy him and George Foreman was supposed to destroy him ... what sets Ali apart was that he was clever enough to work out a way to beat all of those guys ... plus he had amazing resilience ... Henry Cooper's left hook should have been enough to have won any fight ... how Ali came back from that (admittedly with an unofficial 'time out' assist from Angelo Dundee - I don't know ) Ali was easily twice as good as Evander Holyfield .. and Evander was rather comfortable against Iron Mike ...Ali would have had Tyson chewing on his own ears in frustration ... and then done what he did to Big George ... IMHO ...
I agree with most of this but feel the need to point out that Tyson was passe it when he faced Holyfield. Same when Lennox beat him.
I just love boxers with a story, a personality. I feel more in touch with Mike T having followed his career when good boxing was free to watch on ITV. The guy was something else...nowadays he is awesomely wise...brilliant listening to him talk. Ali was just everyone's hero...thats all I grew up knowing and happily accepting. Spent many hours on YouTube watching both of them at their best in and out of the ring....inspiritaional thoughts.
A boxer will always beat a fighter in the ring as they have the craft and the skill to outwit their opponent. A fighter will always beat a boxer out of the ring as there are no rules, hence Ali would beat Tyson in the ring and Tyson would win outside of a ring
I'd be surprised if he didn't in the first six rounds. Would love for him to go on from that and fight Wilder.
Would be in US for big money if it did happen - can't see Mrs G4E agreeing to a boys trip for that as already going away with mates next year to Spain to watch World Cup rather than Russia
I love AJ and genuinely believe he's the real deal but I reckon it'll be a points decision in this one
Except that Tyson was a boxer. He had exceptional technique, which he worked on for hours a day with Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas, two of the best trainers in the business at the time. After he fell out with that pair and into the clutches of Don King, he began to lose that, but Tyson in the 1980's was no slugger, he was crafty, adept, and well schooled in slipping inside the reach of much bigger men. He also threw incredible combinations which required balance, accuracy and timing.
Gene Wilder's dead mate ... but you can't counter that forward roll and back on your feet move from Willy Wonka ...still be open mouthed whilst Gene throws the sucker punch
