Putting Coke in a good dark rum is an offence worthy of cruel and inhuman punishment. Have you tried Pussers rum? 54.5% ABV. Liquid nectar.
Yes, I know. But the only similarity between that and the stuff brewed in Belgium is the name. Must be the chemicals we stick in to speed up the process as they sell lots of beers as strong and stronger in Belgium without it causing people to beat their wives up. Also, you can drink and go in pubs at 16 in Belgium (can't have spirits until 18) but you don't see gangs of drunken teenagers there either despite bars being open for longer in general.
Father in law was on the trawlers many years ago so got the bonded stuff, not sure if it was Captain Morgans, but anyway my wife and I were coming back from Holland on the old North Sea Ferries and duty frees were still worth getting, They were selling off something called Stroh rum, Dutch? Belgian? can't remember now but jeepers as soon as I took the top off the smell nearly knocked me out. But no I haven't tried Pussers, and there are a lot of rum's, brandies, from many countries that I will probably never try, as for the red wines, well up to now we have tried Spanish, French, Bulgarian, Chilean, Argentinian, Californian, Italian, British, South African, Rumania, Greek (although I do like their brandy Metaxa) nothing at all to do with the City Of Culture so I had better get back on topic
Naval background? Pussers seems to be the favourite of salty sea dogs Yes I've had it. It was very nice
I asked for a dry sherry last week, in Lanzarote. The waitress said that they did not have any, she went to the bar next door and brought back a bottle of Cherry Brandy! I suppose I should be glad I didnt fancy a Bols.
My dad was in the navy during the war. Pussers was what was dished out as the daily tot. You had to drink it there and then. He had never drunk before, he was only 17 when he joined up, but as soon as he was 18 he had his daily tot. As he said to me, it was free. He had never smoked but started for the same reason. When I was younger he used to get a bottle of Pussers from somewhere which I was allowed a tiny sip of as it was treated like liquid gold compared to his usual Lamb's Navy and Woods 100proof. Then the rum rations was abolished in 1970. Years before you could get any after that. The story is in the link below. Love the standard Pussers but the Gunpowder one is something else. Went round the Naval Dockyards at Portsmouth last year and there was a shop there with every type of Pussers. Oddly enough I got a liking for rum from my dad which I still have but by the time he was the age I am now he was a whisky drinker if he was having spirits. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pusser's
I do not like Pussers, its too harsh. Brought back 2 bottles of Barcardi 8, nice bit of light sipping rum.
I drank rum on my 21st. Can't think why. Anyway, drank 21 of them, then some pints. Smell of rum still makes me want to puke.
