Our win at Huddersfield equalled our best ever haul of away wins in a season (13) achieved previously by Keegan's 1992/93 promotion team. If we win at Reading on Tuesday we will set a new club record overall. There is no doubt that our away form this season has been nothing short of amazing, but it got me wondering what the outright record is for away game wins/points in a season. I have tried googling it but unusually for the internet there doesn't seem to be anything out there. Does anybody know what the record is, and if it is within our sights?
I do genuinely think it would be interesting to find out. The only record we currently hold (I think) is jointly for the biggest win in English first class football. Would be nice to know if we stood a chance of notching up another one.
We've won 75.9% of the away points available to us so far this season. That has got to be pretty close to the best too.
All I have managed to find so far is that Chelsea hold the record for most away wins in the Premier League with 15 in a season. We have five away games left, so that should be within reach. I am fairly sure a football league team will have exceeded that though with playing more games.
Looking back at the leading contenders for most away wins over the past 15 years in the Championship, Leicester City appear to have the most wins (14) in season 2013-14...
I have found the answer and you are definitely right. Maybe. It depends on how you define and measure 'pretty close', but that is just semantics.
