Yes it was more than a bit rude and not in keeping with the new polite and very friendly me so I apologise profusely but the woman with her bloody phone was a real nuisance.

Tbh, though St.G, I think you make a good point. I have seen people lining up early [crikey, I wouldn't bother] to catch their heroes of the moment and then when said heroes appear they point their smartphones at them and gaze at the screen. Completely missing the true moment. What's the point of that.? Live in the moment. That's all we really have.

I've seen people filming penalties...they'd rather have the picture to look at later and gain a few likes than actually enjoy the tension and thrill of the moment.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed the thrill of the moment when a penalty has been taken <laugh>. It's been a little less painful when MLT or SRL were taking them, but only just.

I've never filmed one though. You'd have to look to do that.

You cover your face with your hands or look away.?

Saints have always been blessed with, at the very least, merely 'good' penalty takers. Usually our penalty takers have been excellent in my lifetime. We never seemed to get a penalty when I first started going down The Dell in 1966, so the first proper one I can remember was David Peach, and he never seemed to miss. So I grew up thinking Penalty - nailed on GOAL. I don't think I've ever had a moment of proper doubt, and if I'm really honest, I don't think I even celebrate that much after we score from one because there's no anticipation element. It's just a done deal. It certainly comes as a complete surprise if we don't score. ;)

Amazingly, Ron Davies only took one penalty in his whole career, and that was for Wales! I seem to remember Terry Paine was the normal spot-kick taker in those days.

    You sure about that?
I seem to remember him taking a few, over the years.

Been very busy since Sunday so here are my late thoughts:

It was good to see a delightful crowd of Not606ers for a (remarkably good) curry before the game. Kissing Helen made my day, whatever was to come.

Wembley? Wonderful. What an amazing space and perfect acoustics.

The atmosphere? I was so proud of our fans I could weep. Man U fans seemed to be in a coma bar the thirty seconds after each goal. OWTSGMI is such an atmospheric song.

    The lino? Whoops!

The game? We played our hearts out and could have won it.

Puel? Our resident curmudgeon is plain wrong. Five minutes before Gabbi was taken off I said to Onionman Jr that he was utterly spent and ought to go off. Who knows what bringing on Shane might have done? At the very least it should have caused Marriner to consider giving us a penalty. I was even happy for Gabbi to go off despite (like Ritchie) having money on a hat-trick from him. Puel completely out-generaled Mourinho (and the Miserable One knew it).

    The Post? Far too wide.

The team? Marvellous. Yoshi stood out for me (though he always has). He was terrific. I also thought Redmond played a blinder; he's scarily keen to take on opponents. Gabbi is a real find. Steve Davis held the team together. JWP seems to have stepped up a gear in the past two months and maintained it throughout the game.

    The result? It happens.

But we'll be back and it won't happen then.

    Vin

In a response to Saints opening goal of the EFL Final, ie the one that was disallowed for no apparent reason, under the current rules of offside, I mentioned that the IFAB have proposed tests for a 'video referee assistant', for game changing situations, would start before the season UK 2017-18 ended. Well, now the news is more specific: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39157887

Probably deserves its own thread, but I wouldn't say that it's specific. Doesn't explain in any way shape or form how it's going to work, just says it might be trialed in the FA Cup.

Not keen on this at all.

I think I know when an article is being more specific than a previous article I linked on a subject. ;)
In the sense that it names a time, a competition, and other areas where it might be tested, and where it has already been tested.

I'm keen on anything which makes the game fairer. If it is quicker than players formerly surrounding the referee and arguing, then that's quick enough.

I mean it's not specific on HOW it's actually going to work. Things such as:

Who makes the decision to review?
What 'major decisions' will be reviewed?
Does the ball have to be out of play?
If no to above, then how is play stopped? How long can play go on for before bringing it back?
In above situation, if any cards are handed out in the period before the play is brought back to overturn the decision are they rescinded?
    Is the clock stopped?

And many, many more. People bang on about bringing it in to get right decisions without actually putting in too much thought to how it will work.

It's not as simple as many make out imo. Pointing to RU, Tennis etc. isn't a suitable comparison either as those sports have a lot more breaks in play naturally.

Again, probably needs it's own thread... don't like the idea of sin bins either.
