I thank you. It is a popular misconception. I thought you could until recently - but you can't. The only way you could swallow your tongue is if it was completely detached from your body, but then I guess swallowing it would be impossible.
I thinkyoucan have your airway blocked by your tongue and this is what people call swallowing your tongue. That's why the hands go into the mouth. If they moved them to the recovery position this will make the tongue fall forward and move the tongue away from the airway although other injuries like head or neck makes this option difficult on occasions
I never thought you could literally 'swallow your tongue', isn't it just a term for having your tongue block your windpipe while it's still attached? Or cant that happen either?
It can block your airway. But that's not swallowing your tongue - that's blocking. People do genuinely believe you can swallow your tongue - as demonstrated by Patty. Whether they are confusing swallowing with blocking, I don't know. But they are two different passages - one's for food and one's for air.
