Kenny had to go. I got a bit of stick for that as I was (hopefully still am) seen as a non-wally poster unlike some at the time. He's a legend but we were terrible. Very close to being as bad as we were under Roy in the end. QPR loss come to mind. Rodgers went off the rails in the end but he had a good go under us and we played some really good football and were easily the best we've been since 2009. One of the few times I thought we would actually win the league since I've been a fan (circa 1994 ish).
Totally agreed. A few on here by using the 'it was all Suarez' theory to play down Rodgers and up Kenny are actually discrediting the team that had a blinder and nearly pinched it. Exactly the sort of nonsense you got from rival fans at the time.
you do know he lucked into both formations and i was derided by astro for months with the #luckedin tag until you all finally realised i was right.
Lucked in or not, he still changed it target than sticking with something that wasn't working. For example, there is no way Rafa would have switch from his tried and trusted 4231. Kenny loved 442. He'd have stuck with Carroll up top (so wouldn't have bought Studge) with Downing out wide. Where would Coutinho (assuming we would have still got him) fit in?
he got lucky the first time with sterling working ok with sturridge and suarez but he have so many injurie he just tried a 343 and got really lucky. I said so at the time and outlined all the injuries sorry but rogers was **** irrespective of what kenny did. I don't really care what kenny would have done. i said he went as a legend. If we never brought in orgers that would have been better but we probably at that point were not looking at klopp genius but wer elooking at martinez and rogers so we were boned either way Rogers is a lucky lucky man
Rafa played plenty of games not in 4231. Sure that was his favourite tactic, but it wasn't his only one. At times he played 3 at the back (or 5 depending on how you looked at it). Sometimes he played two up front, sometimes it was just one holding midfielder. Dalglish was very 4-4-2. Product of his generation. I wish one could blend managers. Blend Dalglish with Rafa. Get Dalglish man management with Rafa's tactical eye. Rodgers was very slow to adapt. The whole world could see when things weren't working but it would take him forever to change his tactics. He was also a huge pushover. I think the players bullied Brodge. Rodgers good season coincided with all the major teams having a bad season. It was like the Leicester season. Only there was no Leicester. I'm not as convinced we were great as I am everyone else having an off season. It's not like the season Rafa came 2nd which was a particularly competitive season. Rafa had no personal angle and seemed to not grasp what to do when players underperformed. Dalglish seemed stuck in the 20th Century with tactics. Roy. Everything was wrong. I have nothing nice to say about him. Klopp seems to be a nice guy. I see no major flaw in him other than he hasn't won anything. Probably the best manager we've had since Rafa. Time will tell if he beats Rafa.
No it didn't. Check out the spread of the top 6 points, rodgers had a far more competitive league than Rafa. There were at least 4 challengers in january, down to 3 after than and down to you and city by april. The rafa season was just you guys and United. Rodgers 1 Manchester City (C) 86 2 Liverpool 84 3 Chelsea 82 4 Arsenal 79 5 Everton 72 6 Tottenham Hotspur 69 Rafas 1 Manchester United (C) 90 2 Liverpool 86 3 Chelsea 83 4 Arsenal 72 5 Everton 63 6 Aston Villa 62
Rafa got enough points to win in Rodgers season. Quality was better in general when Rafa got 2nd. In Rodgers year, City were inconsistent. Chelsea were a shambles. United were nowhere. There was no good quality teams. Everyone was crap top to bottom. It was a bad year for football in general and Rodgers capitalised on that and still only managed 2nd. Rafa's team would have destroyed any of the top 4 teams from Rodgers run. As would any Fergie team. Mourinho's first stint with Chelsea, or most champions from previous years.
Before I get into Kenny vs Rodgers - sacking Rafa after one poor season was the worst thing the club did, and we're still paying for it (thankfully we now have Klopp!). If I recall correctly, Kenny came in after a disastrous start from Roy but did a pretty good job in turning it around and playing some good football. It went south for kenny when he brought in his own players like Carroll, Adam etc. And the whole team just lacked quality. It was right for him to leave when he did. Rodgers was not the first choice - he was a last resort. Klopp and De Boer were high on the list. Having said that, I did find Rodgers very refreshing and I enjoyed his style of football. He tried to instil it at Liverpool but he only ever enjoyed success when he decided to give Suarez a free role in attack. It would be unfair to not credit Rodgers with any of the joys of that season - but I truly believe Suarez led that team. And when I say team, disregard the GK, defence and midfield because they were useless. SAS, sterling, and Coutinho were the driving forces. You could have put Sunday league player behind them and we would have scored goals for fun. But Suarez left and Rodgers didn't have a clue on how to set up the team. The fact that Lallana was brought in to replace Suarez in the first team said it all. We got CL and bought dross. It's a shame because Rodgers kept chopping and changing and ultimately lost his style of play. He became lost and steered away from what made a him a good coach. He lost his way at Liverpool and got to the point where the team was so disjointed. But all of the above stemmed from sacking a top class manager who had a poor season and replacing him inept choices.
This 100 times over. Although I don't think Rafa was sacked for a bad season. He was sacked because he had a poor relationship with H&G on top of having a bad season. Oh and regarding Kenny V Rogers, I didn't know his middle name was Vincent. please log in to view this image
