The other day the Express ran a front page headline essentially asking why Bercow believes he has any right to say Trump cannot address Parliament. In other words, the Express either don't know (or, far more likely, are preying on their readership not knowing) that Bercow actually does have the right to say who does or does not address Parliament - which is no doubt why Mail and Express readers are tossing out lies such as "B-b-b-but Putin addressed Parliament" at regular intervals in spite of one minor flaw in their argument: Vladimir Putin has never addressed Parliament.
Tell me that the Express or The Mail are telling the truth THEN I will be surprised. These two along with the Sun are an affront to our democratic process and always have been. They will support Trump just like they supported Hitler.
Agree 100%. However what is also alarming is the consistently poor - and biased - commentary from the BBC. For example, their cub reporter discussing the latest uproar stimulated by the Tory MP, today referred to Bercow's comments on Trump as 'extraordinary' - clearly (and ironically) taking the side of the those accusing him of impartiality. We live in dangerous times when we literally cannot have faith in any political or media.......
Yep your talking to someone who was involved in the Scottish Referendum and the bias of the BBC caused thousands to march on BBC Scotland in protest. They didn't report it in any fair manner. The BBC have been the voice of the establishment since Thatcher got the hump with them.
The non-print media are so afraid of saying anything controversial, for fear of being seen as biased, that they end up saying nothing at all. This indirectly lends support to what's seen as the status quo - which invariably is the view of the right wing press. By being so anodyne in its comments, the BBC gives voice to the factions it doesn't represent. It needs some balls. .
It's much more than that Luke, it's choice of words like for example, terrorist or moderate. Look at their reporting of the Labour party struggles. The BBC chose to call the anti Corbyn MP's moderates. That depends purely on your point of view and that is clearly a right wing view. We are talking about their news presentation, they still have some very good programming on, Radio 4 for example, that covers many points of view. The news bulletins and programmes like PM are clearly biased.
The issue is the Tories have the BBC by those balls, given the way they keep dangling the BBC's Royal Charter in front of them as well as leaning on the BBC Trust.
The point is, as Speaker and therefore an MP, he will hold strong opinions about most things. His impartiality should be judged on his performance. Saying out loud he voted remain doesn't change a thing - the opinion was always there. At least saying it out loud gives onlookers a chance to judge if he lets his view influence his handling of debates.
Exactly.... Thing is that despite being a Conservative, Bercow seems to have been subject to a concerted attack on his position as Speaker for some years - and all from the Tories. Suggests that his impartiality is not appreciated by the establishment!
Lots of sources are claiming that American Intelligence are treating the White House as compromised. They're not giving them all available information, as they believe it will go straight to Putin and his friends. I'm not sure what's more damaging: that this is allegedly happening or that they want people to know about it.
The final insult, perhaps? The Brazilian government released a picture of the American president. Turns out to be a picture of a Trump imitator...actor Alec Baldwin. Well, what's the difference? Both actors!
The trouble with the American system (apart from the bizarre electoral college, which is a discussion all of it's own) is that so many government appointments are political. In this country there is an (alleged) separation of powers between the executive, judiciary and legislature, which has certainly been compromised from time to time but nothing like the US system where political appointments follow from the Presidential election. Many of those equivalent appointments would not be available to the British Government to appoint (like security and judges for example). I'm sad to say that the Head of the CIA (and homeland security) are political appointments, so I doubt it makes any difference whether "American intelligence" (whoever that is specifically supposed to be) can withhold such information. The whole story seems a bit unlikely actually - could this perhaps be one of those "post truth" headlines? And frankly if the White House is compromised, so are the US security services.
Trump's appointee as National Security Advisor resigns after breaching protocols and probably the law in discussing US sanctions with the Russian Ambassador before taking office. He is also indicated to have lied to Security officials about the conversations. Who would have thought it? A man whose closeness to Russia and Putin raised fears about his suitability for the role, found to be communicating with them clandestinely. Quel surpris!!
The government say that they are willing to ignore the petition that 1.8m people signed pleading with them not to allow Trump's state visit - which essentially means they're agreeing with the second petition signed by 300,000 people pleading with them to make sure Trump's state visit goes ahead. Tory politics in a nutshell, ladies and gents.
Still to be debated by Parliament, but was never going to achieve anything unfortunately. May & her government are so desperate for Trump favours their efforts to please make the Blair/Bush love-in look positively frosty!
The purpose of the law on petitions is to get it debated in Parliament - which is what it has achieved. It is not for 1.8 million people out of a population of over 63 million to set who gets to visit Britain. (although less than that number took us out of the EU)
The replacement is former Lt. Gen Kellogg. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/heavy....al-wife-paige-children-kids-donald-trump/amp/ Queue comments like.... He'll get a more Frostie reception in the Kremlin!!
