No they don't approve Oz. They told them to get behind their lines, and if they stepped out of order they would knick them. I think though that they quietly liked the idea of football fans helping out, though don't think they would say that publicly.

If the EDL were out in force and battered all the rioters I would salute them.

I live in New Eltham, the EDL were not involved, they heard what was happening and tried to grab some PR. It was local people Wall, Addicks and some Spam protecting their community.

Allhell I heard the same thing from a friend in eltham, annoying now that the PM has mentioned "the EDL out in force in southeast london"
Even if he did end it with "nothing more sick then the EDL" they've still taken credit for other people's work :-(

Call me crazy or maybe even naive, but if I was defending my area in a peaceful manner like some other London communities have been able to manage and the police asked me to disperse, the last thing I would do was chant EDL and chuck bottles at the police. If this didn't actually happen as people have stated above and so far I have no reason to no trust what you say, I wonder what the media are playing at if their news reports reflect this and not actually what happened? This is not going to help matters in the slightest and needs to be corrected immediately if indeed false!

SuperC: who mentioned race? As long as the rioters get battered I'm happy. But as a result of this inclusive thrashing, the majority would be black.
That is a fact that the BBC try to cover up, but the majority of people are not stupid...?

Sorry to disagree with you, but I know at least four of the CAFC boys who were at Eltham are EDL. Some of the Wall, who are mates of the CAFC boys also have some sort of connection to the EDL, so to say no EDL were involved in Eltham is actually wrong.

Yes but aren't the majority of football hooligans white and I hope the club get rid of the EDL they are unwanted and out of keeping with attempts to kick racism out of football.

Rifleman, I am not saying that there was nobody from the EDL involved (at all) but Tuesday was originally a group of locals who had been told that Eltham was a looter target for Tuesday night so came out onto the streets to protect THEIR COMMUNITY, the EDL heard of this and decided to try to hijack the initiative. A few cries of EDL were heard on Tuesday but these were soon stopped by the majority.

Wednesday's yobs (about 30) were not local but sky (and News Shopper) decided to transmit coverage as if it were the same people as Tuesday night.

I come from Eltham Stu...... sorry I make you cringe!

Eltham has still got a High Street without any broken glass whereas Woolwich, Lewisham, Lee and Bromley have not? Now why is that I wonder?

I have a number of friends who speak like those interviewed, love their family, love their friends, love their football, love their Country, LOVE THEIR TOWN. That's good enough for me.

So "would you want to be in the same human race classification as that lot?" Yes, I am in that classification.

Although despising any attempt by the EDL to highjack the event if that was the case, I do believe in people coming together to stand up for their homes, families and communities and in supporting the police. One thing I do which is similar is to work with volunteers to remove graffiti defacing our buildings and properties, if it's removed quickly it's less likely to come back just look round Greenwich these days and you won't see lots of it. Another attack on anti-social behaviour.
