Ian Ashby, like Andy Davidson, another most notable club captain had remarkable skills of leadership and influence plus the ability to read the game whilst not necessarily being brilliant or particularly skilful on the ball.
Count me in on the Bobby Doyle love-in - thought he was tremendous till he was crippled by an awful foul (at Doncaster?). Believe he became a lorry driver afterwards
City through and through but was abused from a pig to a dog whenever things weren't going our way by the 'armchair manager' types of the 1960's/'70's - quite possibly our most underrated and certainly one of the most abused players ever to pull on the black and amber.
Some ****er who used sit behind me in the East stand slagged him off all the way up the divisions. I remember one game when we went behind after two minutes and the ****er spat out "Ashbee again the **** ****". I turned round and informed him that Ashbee wasn't playing today. You should have seen him squirm The **** him.
I cant view the original link in the op but is is under rated by Hull City fans or those outside of the club? The two are completely different
Dave Cusack was the perpetrator. File in the same hateful place as Sam Allardyce (George Lyall). Doyle did indeed drive a milk truck in Peterborough after he stopped playing.
I assumed he did it on purpose in an ironic reference to those who perpetually used to get it wrong. I hope so anyway.
An ex work mate of mine played semi pro for Scarborough and several other sides. I asked him who was the best player he ever played against. He said (no word of a lie) ex City player from the 60's/70s...PADDY GREENWOOD.. Therefore I nominate the Paddy for the award..
