Agree though as Mannone is playing well atm should play him. But we all know his distribution problem and that he will mess up sooner or later. I honestly cannot see Pickford messing up -he's a confident level headed player Mannone is too emotional. That's the conundrum for Dour Dave to sort out as his man managment skills are put to the test.
Agree thankfully it's for Dour Dave to call. Seems there's interest In Mannone and Borini from Italy - Genoa I believe .
So pleased he's back with a PMA - pull on - I'm feeling (dangerously) confident for the rest of this season -a masssive KTF
Fans get on Mannone's back constantly about getting the ball out quickly - and when he gets the ball out quickly they get on his back for not being very accurate - he's so far from Pickford distribution wise it's terrifying - but he's a decent keeper. Me - I'd put Pickford back in when fully fit personally - no room for sentiment and Pickford is at least as good a shot stopper, better commander of the box and is streets ahead in distribution
Taking Mannone out the very first second Pickford is available would send a really bad message to Mannone. It would tell him he'll always be number 2 as long as he's here and putting the effort in week in week out wouldn't mean **** as long as Pickford is fit. That would be dreadful man management in my view.
So lets say Defoe picks up an injury and we play Asoro up there and he scores a few goals - would you leave Defoe out? You pick your best players - as I say, no room for sentiment in football
The thing with that is that you'd find a way to play both of them and reap the benefits, can't do that with a keeper. If for some reason you could absolutely only play one forward and Asoro was scoring goals and playing great then I would leave him in until such a time that he didn't score enough to justify his place. Keeping players happy (and at the club) isn't necessarily anything to do with sentiment.
If he was scoring at a better rate than Jermain I'd keep him in... Mannone has kept 2 clean sheets in his last two games, Pickford kept two in sixteen. I appreciate that's a bit of a simplistic view but the fact is Mannone is playing well at the moment, it would be harsh to drop him without reason imo.
Its nothing to do with sentiment. I said its about man management. And that's hardly the same comparison though is it Marcus. Both goalies are potential No.1's at most clubs. You couldn't say that about Asoro at this or Championship level. Bit daft that comparison mate
Its an old cliché but goalkeepers are different and you treat them as such. Perhaps more than any other position, they are prone to lapses in confidence and use superstition and other tricks to help them (see Jens Lehmann's list in his sock v Argentina WC ?2006). Dropping Mannone after a good run of form could destroy his confidence, rendering him useless should we need to call on him again. Also, the message it sends to Pickford is that he doesn't have to put in any effort to won his place back, potentially leading to his standards slipping. Competition for places is what we lack in so many other areas- we should be challenging our goalkeepers to keep them strong.
Still say you play the best p[layers you've got - if De Gea got injured and Romero (is it?) came in and did a great job, do you think Mourinho would leave de Gea out when he was fit again? I suppose I'm not a keeper so I wouldn't actually know the answer and I only coach at u12's level so again I can;t give the answer. I just see Pickford as a far better keeper all around than Vito - Mannone is a decent second choice but I doubt he'd start in any other premier league side
