Depends how you read it. I don't think he's underrated by us fans, but as I said outside the club no ****er has heard of him. How many other PL clubs' greatest player can that be said about?
Based on the FACT that players seem to be better the less they play I reckon it has to be one of Appleby, McPhee or Lenihan.
I took the question to read as how they were rated when playing & not in hindsight. Ash was written off, by many, as not up to it after every promotion. He never failed to prove those who underrated him wrong. With hindsight I think most regard him as our best ever player, maybe because he proved those who underrated him to be wrong.
I'd say he looked a great prospect during his first loan spell with us. Either way, that was in the forth tier. Doubt even his biggest fan would see him having a long and respected career in the premier league back then. Different interpretations of the question I suppose.
Due to him having his pants puled down vs Wigan, Wayne Brown's reputation suffered greatly, he was fantastic in our first Champo promotion season, though a short lived City career comparatively speaking
Bobby Doyle , mid 80 ' s midfielder , broke his leg and had to retire . A great leader on the pitch with Horton .
Beat me to it. He was the first player I remember to become a target of the boo boys. Totally undeserved + he was a local lad to boot. Developed into a good solid player.
Agree with this, always thought he was a bit lightweight but he was a good little player at the levels we were at during his time with us and weighed in with quite a few goals. Always remember his volley from outside the box at Derby, as it nearly got me in big trouble because I was in the home end and forgot myself momentarily and had to be dragged back into my seat by the wife!
Lots of people suggesting Ash, was he really under rated? Ok he was written off each time we went up but once up the majority of fans were impressed and behind him and many people consider him to be one of our best / most influential players ever. The man is a hero!
