Following on from Bri's thread, I thought I'd make a thread so we can discuss the pro's and con's of so called 'healthy' foods and bad foods. I'm not an expert on nutrition, I just go with what works for me so welcome any input from any other posters. There'll always be somebody who knew an old man who ate a fry up every day and smoked 100 a day, he lived until he was 107, or the man who ate 1 meal per day and lived a happy life, so well done and congratulations to them. I'm not saying this is the only way to get healthy but it's how I do it. There's a misconception that healthy food is too strict, flavourless, boring and inflicts nothing but misery on the masses. Let's see.
I don't really know a great lot about this, to be honest. Fortunately, I don't really have a sweet tooth, so I never eat sweets/chocolate. It's very rare I will eat greasy food, pizza's, kebab etc. I do try to have very little intake of salt and sugar. I generally eat chicken every day, sometimes with veg in one of those big yorkshire puddings, or with rice and gravy. Saying that, if I fancy something that isn't the best for me, I wouldn't think twice about eating it.
That's cool mate, this isn't to make people feel bad about what they eat. I think what Billy says is interesting, as it infers that those who live a healthy lifestyle are somehow not eating what they want to eat. That's the misconception. I don't stick to a miserable diet of brussels sprouts, plain chicken and water, because I'd get 3 days in and I'd quit. I had a shake this morning that was 800 calories, and it costs roughly 70p per day to have that shake, that's nothing. The nutritional value of having that daily, is priceless to me, it's the **** in **** out effect innit. I do like Haribo mind, it's my achilles heel.
Me and my wife have both been dieting for a while now, not to any extremes but it's doing the trick, you'd have to go back quite a few years to match the weight I am now. I don't think we eat anything that doesn't taste good. A typical meal would be griddled butterfly chicken with a rub on it, with roasted veg and potatoes on the side and some tzatziki. Some stuff I'm not fond of like tofu and couscous but as long as there's some flavour to my food I'm happy to eat it.

Spuds get a very bad rep in the 'fitness world' and it's completely undue, one of the most important foods in my opinion. Couscous stinks I agree completely, not for me.
I don't think I eat healthy tbh. Love broth. Bacon. Pork crackling. Special fried rice. Corned beef pie. Poached eggs. Chops of any kind. Yorkshire puddings stuffed with meat. Chicken has to have skin on for me as that's the best bit. Kangaroo steak. Buffalo burgers. Sausage rolls. Don't have a sweet tooth at all. Ket makes me feel sick.
I'm waiting to get my Gall Bladder out so am fairly careful fat wise with what I eat. Dont do sugar, other than what's in food which is difficult to avoid, we eat well but rarely have take aways and never have processed meals. I eat lots of fish & chicken but am not obsessive about food, drink little in the way of alcohol but enjoy a pint now and again or a glass of Whisky before bed on occasions. Dont know anything about nutrition just eat what I like, but since 83 promoted this match at the SOL I've got off my backside and jog five days a week, up to a mile and half and hoping to get further when fitter, so a big thank you to 83. Consequently I've lost 10 lbs in weight, bonus.
Seems like a salty diet, but far from the worst sort of diet I've seen and there's some good stuff in there too. Do you drink a lot of water?
Everything in moderation is the key I think, I'll have chocolate when I want it I just won't eat a breeze block sized chunk of it. It's different for everyone but I find eating Greek yogurt with blueberries in it for a snack a lot more palatable if I know it's not going to be as good as it gets for the rest of my life. There's a certain smug satisfaction I get from eating healthily and applying some self restraint which I quite like, bit like how I feel after lifting weights but 20% more smug.
Ltr of flavoured water a day & isotonic drink. I drink to much alcohol so tend to get a bit dehydrated.
Snack health food depresses me, I normally just have some grapes in the freezer if I need something sweet. Or a casein shake.
Billy has just reminded me. Water. That's where I keep falling down. I just barely drink and know that I should drink quite a bit. Apart from my two cups of coffee and 2 protein shakes every day, I don't drink a single thing.
I always have water in front of me, every waking hour. Once you get into the habit it's second nature.
