Hmm . Definitely a Continental vibe down there- minus the garlic breath, pissoirs, basket case economies, jabbering foreigners, driving on the wrong side of the road and horsemeat.
Totally agree with this! Brudenell is my favourite live music venue. Sadly in Hull we don't get the same quality of bands playing so it makes it difficult to get the numbers in for a venture that would be similar. Brudenell makes all its money from putting on gigs. It would be nice if we could have something similar! *edit - this was in response to whoever posted about the Brudenell in Leeds
Sat with a real lump in my throat at the trawlermen sculpture lifted into place on St Andrews Quay today just shown on Look North... looks totally at home and befitting. I believe they said the memorial service is on Sunday..?
I went into town on Sunday to have a peek at the blade. It's a sort of in the wrong place, but perfectly placed sort of thing. You cannot ignore it, that's for sure. Plenty of folk around and about it, the blade certainly attracts interest. I suppose that it is going to be one of those things that you will miss when its gone. As I was heading back to the car, a woman stopped me and she asked what it was. To be honest I was a little surprised. She spoke like a posh local. I found myself explaining what the blade was and the "Made in Hull" element of COC. She told me that she was from Scarborough and was just down for the day. She said that it was all marvelous what was happening and that she hoped it would bring some jobs. She said "you must be proud" I told her I was. I told her that I lived 250 miles away in Southampton and she said "oh what a lovely place". I told her that 20 miles from where I live a factory produces blades just a few metres smaller, but they would never display one like this and there is no pride in the area about it, she said "Southampton is such a lovely place though". I told her that the blade represented the future of a new industry in Hull, she said "Does it take long to drive back or do you catch a train?" And to think I once thought Scarborough was cultured.
I know we're enjoying a lot of positivity but - come on - this is getting a bit carried away isn't it? Spending £1.4m will not bring it up to the same standard as the £550m redeveloped King's Cross. I don't think £1.4m could even create The Parcel Yard... http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/hull...-kings-cross/story-30115849-detail/story.html
Even locals have professed digust to me when the blade was installed, as I was nosing around the city centre for a first look of the beast a couple of people said 'what a load of rubbish' or words to that effect. And when I replied that I thought it was brilliant I just got a scornful look and off they went.
That's not it, there's a new memorial to lost trawlermen at St Andrews Quay, it looks like this... please log in to view this image
The new one is a specific lost trawlermen memorial, the one you've posted is a memorial to everyone lost at sea, it includes those lost in the wars etc.
Again thanks, but where the flowers are there are inscriptions of trawlermen lost at sea and this inscription was of a lad that I knew who was on his first, and last, trip out to sea. RIP Robert.
Agree Kings Cross is somewhat ambitious, but good to hear this is happening - Hull keeps moving on. We're making up for lost decades at the moment, more of this please!
