The biggest influence on popular music singing was Louis Armstrong who basically invented they way to sing that all following him were influenced by.
Also from The Man In Black [and written by the wonderful Nick Lowe - who produced The Damned's 'New Rose']
Here's Louis singing a song that he had sung since the 1920's. Nobody sung like this before him it was all straight like musical singing or simple folk like stuff. Louis revolutionised it all.
Hugh Lawrie does a great version of that. His first album was all music from that era, it is a great album.
A very little known band - The Mob. Their 1983 album 'Let The Tribe Increase' is, to my ears, one of the best punk albums ever. After years of inactivity they are out and gigging again - Hurrah.
I love a bit of Rockabilly/Psychobilly/Punkabilly. The Cramps were an extraordinary live act and recorded some amazing stuff. It ain't for everyone but I adore this....

First: what a brilliant thread!!!! Second: I think my own tastes are closest to Spurf's choices, nearly every one of which I'd include within at least my "I like this" category". Third: Those of you who participate in the Prediction League - or maybe even simply follow it from time to time - will, I imagine, not be entirely surprised if I claim to have a fairly catholic* taste in music. I could post umpteen songs (and some music without words, too) on here. Just haven't got time to go into detail about it. I've been an amateur folk singer for many years, and folk music is at the heart of my musical taste. I also sing in a local community choir, used to go to a trad jazz club, and go to classical concerts, rock gigs, and (please don't comment) ballet and opera performances. But I guess I must admit to a minority taste as my first love. Most years I go to a big Folk Festival..... So forgive me if I post links to two of my favourites. One bit of what my friends call diddley-diddley stuff; and one bit of politically oriented stuff (which I reckon is a message for these rather depressing times, by the way). I really love both of these - please bear with me and watch/listen both in full. Please! ** I'm not referring to either The Popes or Sinead O'Connor, by the way (although I'd include both in the range)! (with apologies for the guy in the yellow t-shirt!) I'll post other stuff if time permits - but I have a song to re-write right now!
