Col and Telford won't be bothered by this as they're all about sovereignty in law-making, but I would think that a lot of Leave voters would be a bit miffed if Stephen Crabb (who stood for Tory leader last year) was right.....

“There could be another rude awakening for the public when they realise that Brexit will not mean a cut in immigration after all"

The money markets always take a cautious approach at anything new, but there's evidence that the City is becoming increasingly relaxed about Brexit. I doubt immigration numbers will slump in the first year of our regaining our independence, but we'll have control again and can hold our politicians to account.

This is not news. Unless of course the Telegraph, Mail, Express and Sun have declined to report what was said in the immediate aftermath of the vote. We have known about this since then.

It's an opinion. An opinion from somebody who stands for election. His constituency can make of it what they will. And that's all good. It's democracy.

"There can be no democratic choice against the European treaties"

This is also an opinion. An opinion from somebody with power who hasn't stood for election. And has no constituency to remove him from that position of power. It's EU democracy. adore.gif

"I am for secret, dark debates." The President of the European Union. adore.gif

And, as you like the Guardian:

"The president of the European commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, spent years in his previous role as Luxembourg’s prime minister secretly blocking EU efforts to tackle tax avoidance by multinational corporations, leaked documents reveal."

    https://www.theguardian.com/busines...blocked-eu-curbs-on-tax-avoidance-cables-show

It's a good/scary read. Depending on your subjectivity of course.

worse then that, I think it was ******s. Whatever, the impartial (my ass) BBC have put up who was more likely to vote Leave or Remain. Basically said the more educated section of the population voted Remain. I'm of the opinion, it was more, will I lose my job if this mass influx of cheap labour continues? voted Leave

Agree, and it's fine for the Islington elite to get a cheap nanny, but hard on the working man who has to compete with a Romanian plumber who sleeps on the floor in a house of 23 fellow migrants to keep his costs down.

We're learning that the Green Belt is threatened by the huge increases in population and 50% of new houses will go to immigrants. Traffic in Central London now moves on average slower than walking pace and if you live in London, you spend an average of 20 minutes looking for a parking place, and it's getting worse...

At some point someone in authority has surely got to say, what is the optimum number this country (the south-east anyway, and possibly other highly populated regions) will take without severely affecting the quality of life of those who live here? It's fine for Wee Surgeon to shout that she demands more immigrants - only a few want to live up there

Understandable that people would vote Leave to get control over EU immigration if they felt their job was threatened. I know a trucker who did the same because his firm started employing drivers from abroad who held the same driving qualifications but accepted lower wages. Employers have no problem with a labour pool who will participate in a race to the bottom.

Let's make sure that we don't end up doing the same thing anyway, just because we swallow the line that we have to be cheap to get any work in the post-Brexit future. Ask your politicians to protect you from greedy owners and don't give up hard-earned rights. All I ever hear is how slackening off employee legislation will make businesses more efficient and viable. I never hear how that efficiency will benefit the staff.

If you are an English plumber; who turns up on time, provides concise costings, is pleasant, and does a good, timely job with no "hidden extras" - you are going to be fine. As we discussed earlier on this thread - once you are known as a good workman, you build up a clientele.

if you are an English plumber; who doesn't turn up when you said, does a shoddy job, overcharges, adds on "sundries", is rude, leaves a job half finished then disappears claiming you were in hospital for a week - you are going to get bettered by a Romanian plumber.

There's a general downturn on wages for all workers, but especially blue collar workers I appreciate that - it's not going to get any better by replacing hard working EU workers, with workshy, terrible English workers.

the reason I left Acton in 2007 for the SW. Overcrowding. I can only guess how bad the tube is Monday rush hour. It's bad enough Saturdays when arriving 12ish at Waterloo to watch the r's

Even good blue collar workers get undercut by workers from low wage economies who are prepared to live in poor conditions. Sure, good workers may build up a clientele but in these times of austerity, if consumers think they can get the same job done for 2/3rds the price, they will probably jump at it. And what of young English workers who have yet to build the customer base?

Nevertheless, I think your general point about sheltering poor workers from competition is well made, Tooting.
