Stats are like ladies of the night, once you get them down you can do anything with them. I've always been against people trying to win arguments purely on statistics. I don't think there's any doubt that Lampard was the better goalscorer out of them both, the stats clearly show that. Lampard was more of a forward playing midfielder where as Gerrard would stay back and get stuck in while starting attacks. They were quite similar in a lot of ways, but we'd need to look at just more than goals to show who was the best.
Gerrard was the perfect all round midfielder. Lampard wasn't. Seriously can't believe people think Lampard was a better player, bizarre. Lampard played in a better team for most of those years, Gerrard was the team for most of his years. Istanbul (and the route to the CL final) was unbelievable what Gerrard did. FA cup final, won purely because of Gerrard's desire. Lampard scored a lot of goals (mostly pens!) in a very good team. No where near as good imo.
For me, I'm not sure you can say who was the 'better' player as, despite them both playing in central midfield, they were simply not that 'alike' ... Gerrard's long rage passing was certainly superior; admirably suited to 'Pools often last ditch long ball style ... whilst Lampard was a better finisher ... (I'd have loved either in my team tbf - both top drawer).
I hate it when people say that he was bad at tackling. He knew exactly what he was doing. Filthy bastard and the media constantly let him off and made excuses for him. The dirty ginger ****er admitted it after he retired.
I didn't say he was bad ... I said he'd win 'worst' ... so I think we are in agreement .... he was a nasty little bastard and would often leave his foot in for effect and to wind up the opposition ...
**** me the oldest most boring debate in the book. As we're on the subject who shall we play for England, or both? Perhaps Gerrards on the left? Perhaps Gerrard playing deep as Lampard goes forward? Perhaps both in the centre taking turns going forward and covering each other? Oh isn't it annoying Scholes isn't about for England anymore say the Mancs perhaps with reason. Oh I prefer Paul Scholes. Oh but Gerrard played in crap teams unlike Lampard and Scholes and carried Liverpool single headedly. Yeah, but Frank scored more goals and won titles. Yeah but surely they can both work together for England? Surely. SURELY?!
They are not strikers. GS stats is hardly are fair measure of a midfielders ability. You would have to find distance covered, passing stats, assists and clearances to get a decent picture on who is the better player on that basis.
