I won't start making the pie just yet.

Probably just buy a Pukka one if it comes to that.

    1. Woke up this morning hoping we'd bought a CB, but disappointed....as I am sure the club are. No point in berating them because I'm sure they tried, but looks like all attempts went wrong. No point in buying someone that you will never play and looks like a deal they thought would go through didn't. At least we got cover for Fraser and, what we really needed, a striker....wouldn't want to go into February with just Shane.

    2. Hope someone steps on Vardy and puts him out for the season.

    3. I too think we will get another season out of Virgil, but cannot promise to eat Humble Pie as I hate offal.

I know it's not ideal, and it likely will happen at some point (as it would with any pairing), but can anyone give me a game where the Stephens/Yoshida partnership has looked anything but solid?

    Not all bad.

I would say it hasn't really looked solid in any game. it hasn't looked terrible either but to suggest they are a solid centre back pairing is viewing them through saints tinted glasses.

They were our 3rd and 4th choice at the beginning of the season. Based on that, Yoshida and Stephens have stepped up and they certainly don't scare me and Stephens has a chance to gain experience and be a good Saints player. My fear is not playing them, but one of them getting injured.:emoticon-0107-sweat

Neither of them are Van Dijk, but then any replacement we brought in wouldn't have been him either. And getting someone not as good as Maya or Jack in on loan wouldn't have sped Virgil's recovery, so we'll just have to swallow this one and hope for the big man's speedy recovery.

Romeu better stay fit though. Keep feeding him raw meat and protein shakes.

So our potential summer transfer activity could and probably should include 1 quality CB (2 if VVD does go), 1 DM, 1 AM who can contribute goals, 1 ST (to replace JRod if he goes) and maybe a RB if Pied isn't quite sharp enough post long term injury. 6 signings is never going to happen is it? :emoticon-0102-bigsm I must still be in dreamland.

I can't really recall them having any issues in either, so I'm sticking with solid to date. If anything colours perspective it's just how good VVD is. This currently looks like a half decent mid table central defence.

If we had a half-decent mid-table central defense for the whole of the season, we'd be in a staring contest with the drop line. We'd look a lot like Leicester, actually: 24 goals for, 38 against, two points clear of 18th.

We can't be happy at the board 'trying' to bring in a CB and failing. We've needed Fonte upgrading for the past two years. We knew he was wanting to leave in the summer, then again this window, yet we still didn't replace him. Plus we needed another CB as cover with Gardos injury prone and Stephens untested.

The board trying to get someone in is not acceptable given the amount of time they've had to plan this. "We won't sell until we've got a replacement lined up" is just another lie about transfers!

Puel will take the majority of the stick from any poor defensive displays when really the blame lies solely with Reed and co which is unfair. I never normally slate the board because of the success they've delivered over the past years, but this is embarrassing and overall awful from them.

Disappointed that a few more fringe players didn't go out on loan. Isgrove, Reed, Hesketh (if fit), Barnes & Olomola could all do with more game time in more competitive environment (ooooh, get me speaking all football manager-like).

Still time to loan them to lower league clubs I think. Whether we will or not is another matter.

Exactly, so it's too soon to say they're not good enough to cover.

But short-sighted to say the two are fine to cover as only CBs for the rest of the season? VVD seems serious and Gardos a huge gamble. Having lost Fonte? Yeah Les will have had targets who didn't work because January/Sakho, but still come on.
