Pompey are closing in on a move for Eoin Doyle.

It is understood the Preston striker has been identified as the player Paul Cook wants to inject more goals into his Blues side.

And Pompey are hopeful of tying up a loan deal before the week is out.

The 28-year-old has started just six Championship games since arriving at Deepdale in the summer from Cardiff.

The Blues can offer regular first-team football - also uniting Doyle with his former Chesterfield boss.

Under Cook, the Irishman netted 13 goals as the Spireites claimed the League Two title in 2013-14.

The following campaign he struck 25 times in 33 appearances to earn a February 2015 switch to the Bluebirds.

Cook has made it clear signing a new centre forward is his priority during the current transfer window.

Bolton Wanderers also want him on loan, but Pompey may hold the ace card in the fact Paul Cook managed him at both Sligo Rovers, and Chesterfield, and knows him well. We shall see <ok>

Let's get him. These kind of players will be hungry, fit and ready to play their hearts out to better themselves, something I doubt from the likes of Eoin Doyle who I hope opts for Bolton.

Bolton is a great place Eoin. Pompey have signed two great lads from Richmond. These two guys, if given the chance, could be Pompey's answer to Palace's Wright and Bright who both emerged from London non-league football.

Pompey also looking at Bolton Wanderers 24 year old striker Jamie Proctor, in case they don't capture Eoin Doyle from Preston.

Rueben Reid anyone? Oh hang on he's not our's anymore. But you always fancied him Wooperts :1980_boogie_down:

I thought I'd better mention him as it wouldn't be a transfer window otherwise.

We have secured the loan signing of striker Eoin Doyle from Preston until the end of the season.

Young midfielder Ben Close has joined non-league Eastleigh on loan again until the seasons end.

Just read that we have released defender Adam Buxton from his contract by mutual consent.

Must admit, didn't think much of him when I saw him play.

Paul Cook has strengthened his right-back options by recruiting Aaron Simpson from Wolves.

The highly-regarded 19-year-old joins on loan for the rest of the campaign.

Simpson appeared for Wolves’ reserves against the Blues in November’s goalless draw at Westleigh Park in the Premier League Cup.

The departure of Adam Buxton by mutual constent has created space in the squad as Cook attempts to resolve the long-running issue.

Arron Simpson, right, in action against Pompey Reserves this season.

Good Morning Woopert's!! I have mixed feelings about Doyle as I would have loved Lowe and his fellow striker from Richmond to have been paired in attack like Wright and Bright were for Crystal Palace after they were plucked from non-League football. Good luck to Simpson (plus he is British Afro Carribean which I really like) so I hope he settles in well. It will mean Evans playing in a more advanced role that should help make PFC more potent going forward.

Hi Ides - Pompey had to sign Eoin Doyle in their hunt for goals, as Michael Smith was not performing his role as a goal scoring striker - simple as that !

Agree with you re. both Jamal Lowe and Nicke Kabamba making the first team squad, and being given the chance to impress. Lowe has come on as a sub in Pompey's last two games, and has impressed me with his movement and pace.
