Initially when seats were installed, the prices doubled. The justification being that in the cash-strapped 80s/early 90s, they had to recoup the installation costs. Then the prices would lower again. They never did, they kept rising and raising and rising.....
As I recall it, it was not uncommon to get jumped outside the ground especially in the streets to the west and north of BP, where away fans would park their coaches, vans and cars. No attention paid to age or overwhelming numbers in favour of the attackers. This stuff never made the HDM, it was away from the ground and police. Scarves nicked, punches and kicks meted out for fun. Now if you had been on the receiving end outside the ground, then saw your attackers on Sledmere with the numbers more even , was it any surprise trouble occurred? Some very naive or inflammatory stuff posted on here about trouble at games back then. If you and 3 mates were getting legged by 60 Bolton, or if you got your scarf nicked by 20 Sheffield, what do you do? Resolve to take up chess ? Make a detailed description of your attackers at the police station ? Or stick with it despite the risks at many games and get more street wise?
You just went, home and away like me and Tubbylard and others did. Though not many ventured away until later years when they were big fish in a pond rampaging around places with smaller populations than Bransholme.
Do you really think so? So nothing to do with the second goal in the first leg and a "no chance" mentality, or it's on telly and it's cold outside. The owners should take some blame but IMO it should have still sold out. Max 5k of stay away fans (and I dont believe it's that high) so even with them 21k. Very poor. What has happened to the glory fans at the 2008 play off final?
We've got 5,000 stay-away fans in the Premier League this season, hardly a surprise if it's even lower for the secondary cup competition.

We took a special train to Sheffield United in the early 80s, when we were absolute toilet football-wise. That was the first time there had been a football train since Man utd away (yes!*) in 1975. The long slow decline of the club had not been completely halted but lots more determination to stop it than in previous years. This was at the height of rugby mania, small gates at BP and a backs-to- the-wall spirit with gates if under 5,000 now the norm. Put on a train and they will come. (* that Man U special in Feb 75. Don't know anyone who was on it, but heard it was mainly Man U)
Do you have a dictionary? Look up the word "primary". It doesn't mean the same thing as "only". The 2008 Wembley final was a massive feelgood factor for the whole East Riding. Whole families travelled to Wembley and enjoyed the weekend. That feelgood factor has been almost entirely squashed - though many like me still love the football, the experience of feeling a part of the wider club ethos has gone. If you want to put that to it being a bit nippy on Thursday, fair enough. Others have a different view.
i traveled away in the mid to late 70's....lived out of town at the time (Holme Moor), my old man used to take me in car, went to places like Bolton (the year they went up 77? ), Sheff Utd, Notts Forest when Wealands saved 2 penalties and we got a rare away win, Donny cup game were we actually took big numbers etc, used to take a scarf at first as only 12 in 77' but soon wised up after my old man spotted some Sheff Utd waiting near there car park one time, things seemed to change about 81ish.

Car ownership then was nowhere near as common as it is now. We had the Humberside Supporters which was like a cult word of mouth set up, where you had to really dig and dig to find out how to get on their bus. Almost like they didn't want people to travel National started to run coaches to northern games in about 1976, otherwise away travel was very problematic. Remember going to Ewood park in Nov 1976 (lost 1-0 eleven minutes from time) and met some almost friendly Sheff U fans at Hartshead Moor. Thought our seven bus turnout was decent, till they said they said they had 42 buses going to Blackpool.
Bit late but just wanted to say that our performance against Man Utd was quite possibly the best I have ever seen from a City side. I mean we actually bossed it at times, I have never seen us play against a top team like that.
Only me who got 'biffed' by Millwall, Tottenham, Stoke et al when I wasn't even looking for trouble. Some would say those were the days. I think a middle ground somewhere between the '70's and what it has become would be ok. We definitely need some atmosphere which can only be genuinely provided by the supporters. If only legislation and common sense would allow it.
