I never swear in front of kids - well try not to. It can be difficult at St Mary's sometimes though. I do on this forum as it is more informal and there is a swear filter. I also agree if you use it sparingly it has a more profound effect!

Because I was just discussing the point and I know that, however I may feel about it, other people (including people actively participating on this thread) are offended. My suggestion was actually a slightly whimsical idea to get all swear words out of use quite rapidly. I think it would be hard to read into my post the slant that I'm "desperate for its use".

I'm not concerned whether you're religious or not; I was pointing out that 90% of "offensive" phrases were historically adjudged to be so for religious reasons, not that anyone who objects to them is doing it for religious reasons.

I guess I must come from an old fashioned family then. I Admit to using the odd Bloody, Damn, and sod it when among adult friends. Rarely if ever in front of children.
However if you speak to my own Children they would tell you they have never heard me swear. As I still tend not to in front of them, old habits I guess.
They on the other hand have a different attitude about swearing in front of me!! Although it has never come up in conversation I have never heard my Children swear in front their own children, nor does any of my grandchildren (15 of them) swear in front of their parents and certainly not me!!
(The older Children age range from 18 to 28)
Is this so unusual, then nowadays?

I can say I wasn't offended Vin....just very surprised...........It stumped me as to what as an adult I should do ...if anything. I didn't expect to hear such language from Children as young as they were.

Of of my sadnesses is that kids like that have such a restricted vocabulary. I regularly hear students from King Edward School walking down our road sometimes (literally) using f*** every third word. These are highly educated young people who should have the whole of the language of Shakespeare at their fingertips and they choose one word to replace every alternate adverb, verb, adjective and noun.

However, it's not new. In an excellent book about the First World War, The Middle Parts of Fortune, Frederick Manning berates the lack of imagination of troops whose every other word was "f***".

Perhaps we should work to bring back "perishing", "blinking", "bloomin", "crikey" and "lawks a lordy".

I don't often swear. There are far more inventive words for getting your point across. They are just words though, however it's the intent/delivery of the sentence that is quite vile sometimes. Not saying Jesus because it's blasphemy (according to my mum), is quite frankly, ludicrous though.

Lots of fun today, in a geeky old man way. Bought an old (40+ yrs) SP25 MKiv Garrard not working turntable for £6 a few days ago.
Today spent mainly listening to lots of loverly vinyl after several hours cleaning/degreasing it's amazing clockwork mechanical bits.
I know it has rumble and can't cope with tracking under 2gms but the little bugger is so musical it's amazing.
    Bowie, Steve Harley, Rush, Mott the Hoople . . . . . . . . . . . . nice

We are having an extension done this year ( modest 2 bed bungalow ) When that is all sorted , will get my records that have been at my parents for years , and then get my LP12 serviced ( in the loft at the moment ) then treat my self to a new amp & speakers ( Rega probably ) and I will be in heaven !

    The cats won't though ...........

Ahhhh . . . . Linn! Lovely stuff. Maybe because my hearing falters as I age I seem to be adjusting my analog stuff. Obviously nostalgia plays a part but the beauty of the sp25 is it's basicly fun to play stuff on. Never underestimate fun.

I agree 100% . Part of the joy in lp's IMHO is the cover , putting on the record on , cleaning it , taking care of the stylus etc etc , it is a DIFFERENT sound , but I can't wait !

Like flicking through a photo album instead of something that could be used as a coaster .......

Oh dear. Buoyed by your post, I've just done a quick count of my turntables. All of them work but a couple are incomplete. I think I have a collection now. 1] Linn LP12/Ittok/Troika, 2] Thorens TD160MkII/Hadcock-GH228/Nagoaka MP-30, 3] Goldring GL75/Goldring 1040 [if I extend my arm I can touch that one now], 4]Pioneer PL12D/Ortofon VMS20E MkII, 5] Garrard 86SB/ADC VLM, 6]Garrard 2025TC/Sonotone 9TAHC [for giggles like your SP25, my first ever turntable was a MK III], 7]Bollox, nearly forgot the Dual CS503 [which I've loaned to my nephew] and an ADC 1700/Audio Technica AT5 which is boxed up to loan to my niece. They all want to get their records out again. Of course, neither of them have Amps with phono inputs, so they have to purchase pre-pre amps. True Bandwagoners.! :)

Cartridges , of which as you know the stylus is a part , are works of art IMHO !

And offer a wonderful sound , but , I think you and Green saint would agree , it is hard work to achieve , but so much more rewarding for that fact .

So much FUN as well !
