It does indeed make one proud to be a Saint! Who is this George Mells? First I have heard of him, suppose he is only 14. I have tried looking him up and apparently he was at Chelsea last year? Someone left a comment about him on some website about future Aussie talent: Sat, 10/30/2010 - 19:39 â Anonymous (not verified) Tyrone James ex Fulham who played alongside George Best, Bobby Moore , Rodney Marsh, went to the UK and tells me we have a class act in young Georgie Mells, smart finds space has two good feet vision beyond his age and can pass a ball over short and long distance. chelsea played Southampton and georgie was excellent. Funny how it mentions he played against us!
Yeah at first I thought oh well it's only Australia he's playing for a big European Nation but with the progression of the game in Australia and their success in basically every other sport I wouldn't be surprised if they started churning out some real corkers.
True but it's very rare you will get by on sheer talent alone especially in a country not known for Football and that doesn't invest into the sport. A talented player needs the support of coaches, facilities, ambition and even then a decent amount of luck.
The fact that he played for Chelsea before may suggest he's been in England for some years, and may have moved over here a while back? We'll find out soon enough I guess.
Yeah he could be English born and bred for all we know and just have Australian parents or something doesn't bother me as long as we help him to continue to develope
Me too mate. Well if this Georgie Mells turns out to be a Mark Bresciano I will be happy! Like the USA's MLS, The Aussie A league is getting better and better so it can't be too long until their Academies start churning them out as you say! Whats this Alberto Seidi like? I keep seeing him mentioned when playing for our u18/21's and can remember on the OS when it gave a round up of our youngsters and for him it said something like, a quick forward with an eye for goal who scored loads of goals for Guinea-Bissau academy! Makes me think he could be a talent! Just seems that we have plenty of youngsters in all positions that could make the grade - the Cortese vision slowly coming into fruition!!
http://www.thebigtip.com.au/football/futureroos-–-golden-generation-makes-way-team This is the site I found, doesn't mention our George Mells directly but the comments do, seems he has been going back and forth between Blighty and Oz!
There's a guy called Sam McQueen who's been scoring goals like its going out of fashion for the Academy hopefully he will be good.
It's been happening for quite a while now, I believe, but young players with real potential are coming to Southampton as a preference over other clubs, because they know they will progress further and faster. It means status and money, for Saints, or progress up the leagues. Frankly, I don't know how Saints have done it. I don't really know how Saints have always had this reputation, going right back to the years of Terry Paine, that they produce quality youngsters on a regular basis. The players that have come out of the Saints Youth Scheme/Academy, over the years, read like a who's who of British Football. I don't think it is any accident that Saints rise to prominence coincided with their ability to produce young players of quality. Someone [Ted..?] had a inspired thought to start it all off. Lawrie progressed it greatly, and [tohis credit] Lowe progressed it further. Cortese has realised it is a pot of gold, and has invested heavily. Great to see it getting bigger and better still. Younger posters [if they don't know already] may be interested to know that [I've looked this up in my Match of The Millennium book] that on a night in early April 1957k, Saints Youth beat the Man U Youth team 3-2 at OT. Yes, they had beaten us 5-2 at The Dell, but then the had won the youth competition 4 years on the trot, and had never lost a single leg in any two legged tie until then. Matt Busby heaped high praise on the Saints Youth team, at the time, and we know how much Man U, to this day, considers the importance of bringing along the youngsters.
Here's another page, just stating who's been young stars and young flops!! Of course we only produce stars!! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2024185/Best-worst-British-teenage-transfers.html
the new academy rules means we will be able to get the best talent from the rest of the country rather than just those who live within an hour of the training ground/bath centre of excellence
My mate plays for Totton and plays with a guy who used to be in Saints academy and he still keeps in touch with everyone and he told me apparently the coaching staff have been shocked by development of Corby Moore. This is obviously a good thing for us but we have a lot of good CM's surely if he is developing well a loan would help that if only for a few months but you know how these things are could be a load of rubbish but seems a bit specific to be just made up rambling.
