    Bloody hell.

Why?! You go out to protect your community and you get killed. It's not right... It's at times like this I wonder about some of the people in this country. How can they do such disgraceful things?!

I was shocked when I heard the news. Not only because it was so close to my house, but they were all friends, they all knew my brother and were all good people.

    They're dad always said

It really hits home when something like this happens to people you know.

Hope you and your brother are doing O.K.

And that quote you put in at the bottom sums it all for me.

Yeah, I personally didn't know him aswell as my brother.

My brother moved out of the area just a few weeks ago, but before that he used to be with them pretty much all the time.

    Words cannot describe it anymore.

They should be ashamed of themselves, they will get caught and they will be put in prison. Makes you feel sick.

The driver has been caught apparently, arrested. If he gets anything less than life this country is down the toilet.

He will get life. I think the country and the government has woken up now and will take this issue extremely seriously. I would expect a lot of people to be put in prison over the coming months.

The trouble is the prisons are full. I know this first hand as i work for the prison service. The rate of conviction is so much higher than the rate of release, therefore creating huge backlogs.

That is a Ministry Of Justice statement.

On one side, people who work for the prison service say the prisons are full and then you get statements like that. Don't know who or what to believe...

The police need to organise a website to post all the cctv pics in one place so that people can identify these idiots and report them. At the moment there are lots of pics but in different places.

The main problem is the hold up for release. People are literally sitting around in prison waiting for release papers. We have about 6 free cells currently at our prison (which holds over 850). The previous prison i worked at the max free space was about 10 cells.

There are a few spaces here and there but no-where near enough to lock masses of people up nationwide.

It's just an idea but maybe the people waiting for release papers could be moved into some sort of halfway house? It would free up prison spaces... Not sure how it would work though.

That already happens - but even for this the holdups are ridiculous. The paper work in the prison service is insane. Honestly even for someone to transfer from one prison to another the paper work takes a whole team about half a day.

The trouble with the half-way houses is local authorities not happy about the idea of prisoners being dumped on them. It does happen though as much as possible.

Also the amount of foreigners in our prisons is disgraceful. I don't mean from a 'racist' standpoint but purely meaning they should be deported to their own country. The last prison i worked at was a CAT C in the south west and it was 70% foreigners. This obviously means less spaces for the British criminals in our society.

Out of those 70% the vast majority were in for smuggling offenses - due to our prisons being notoriously easy people from various countries think the risk of being caught is worth it. Prison life in Britain is often better than the life they live in the own home. For example i knew an African prisoner very well - he had a 15 yr sentence for drug smuggling, he was happier than he had ever been - 3 meals a day, healthcare, education, TV, Playstation etc etc. That is a better life than he would ever have back home. He knew this and that's why he committed the crime, he even said that in a way he hoped he would get caught. Basically a win win situation .

Wow. Seems like there are some serious problems with our prison system...

I do agree with you regarding foreign prisoners. They have come into our country illegally, get nicked, put in prison and end up staying here. Why can't we deport them once they are caught?!

That's a complicated question. A lot has to do with political relationships between different countries, of which is extremely complex.

Also - simple things such as not knowing what country prisoners are from etc etc play a part.

The whole dilemma is extremely complicated and to be honest the answers are far from clear
