What happened with Toby is saints tried to be smart and let a technicality in the contract play out. This technicality meant Atletico must inform saints that they will pay to cancel the "future fee" by a certain date. As they actually missed this date saints thought they were entitled to sign him for £6m or whatever figure it was.
Basically we tried to be clever but it backfired, although we ended up with Virgil in the end so hey-ho!

Hmm I don't really see what Toby did wrong. The actual offers were out of his control and even if he did tell his agent spurs are his preference he didn't owe us anything. He was just loaned to us for a season from Atletico, he hasn't done anything wrong in my eyes.

 

So he didn't give the club the impression he was signing for us?

Perhaps he was going to until he learned of spurs interest? These things are so hard to tell as the fans only ever hear half the story.

But as you say, it's a long time ago now and we wouldn't have Virgil if he did sign. Every cloud.

God, you can tell it's a slow news day when we get back to discussing a transfer that didn't happen several windows ago. I have never recovered from our failure to sign Colin Todd in the late 70's. Any more news on that one?
