    Since SKP.

**** knows where the team would be without him.

Bye bye Altidore, hello Defoe. <laugh>

SKP v JD not a debate at the moment, in terms of scoring. But SKP had Big Niall, two quality wingers and a midfield that could win the ball and attack with it, so he had a bit more help than poor Jermain does...

Probs no worse than JD, but not as well as the SKP in Reidy's team...

    Possibly.

Today's Jermain Defoe would've scored probably ass many as Phillips in Reidy's team. Superb . Phillips was, IMO, a far better all round footballer than JD (and much less greedy too!)

Defoe needs to be greedy. No one else to help him.

JD is the better footballer imo, without writing a dissertation on it, I think it's a simple conclusion to come to when you take emotion out of it.

I love them both - but Phillips wasone of the best crossers of a ball I've seen at our club and one of the best passers too. Defoe doesn't score many scorchers (although when he does they're proper ones like the one against the mags!!) but Phillips was capable of some unbelievable things. Best centre forward I've seen at Sunderland in my lifetime

Subjectively I can see why, because he's a cult hero but to me, it's like Leicester with Vardy. He's a hero. I'll not try to change anybody's mind, but to me, there's not a debate.

Defoe is as much of a hero to us now though.

It's not even a debate really - I love Defoe but I can;t ever remember him playing 40-50 yard crossfield passes to switch play (Phillips used to do that with ease), or running to the byline and crossing in a pinpoint cross - he almost always looks for the easiest option when at the byline - Phillips never did. I can be very objective as I've seen a lot of them both. Defoe is playing in a far worse team at present and scoring goals for fun still! Phillips did the same - but he was labelled a failure by the press with 18 in his season after his 30 goaler! (and he missed a third through injury iirc)

Defoe is class - Phillips was better

To most outsiders I think Defoe would be the clear winner. To score the number of goals he has with that support on the pitch is phenomenal. Phillips was excellent but had so much more to work with, I wouldn't say it's not close but I would otherwise agree with Tel on this.
