This is one of the reasons why I think our model works so well for us.

If say this Summer, a bright young talent from Europe has interest from both us and say, West Brom. I think he'll look at us and think "Well if I go to Southampton, and perform well then I'll most likely get a move to a big club in a couple of years."

I'm enjoying it too. It's called a debate or a discussion with no name calling you horrible little... oops :)

I disagree with the bit in bold (and before it). I think you are being too literal. I think the model is to buy good talent or good potential as low as possible with a view to building a good team. This is done with the knowledge that football doesn't work by piecing things together; something often/always falls out of the puzzle. Therefore I think that the model
Is to buy low and only sell high when the player doesn't want to stay. We are protecting ourselves so that if a player really wants to go, at least we get good money in most cases.

They want to sign players that are good for the club and the team. The selling part only comes into play when the player won't re-sign or makes it clear he wants out.

I'll add that I don't think any of the players who have gone have been a case of the club responding to an enquiry. I think the agents and player already know about being wanted by another club. That's what the agents job is.

The only player that may be different could be your example of Virgil, however that's hypothetical at the moment because he hasn't gone yet. He'd be the first to go with several years left on a contract and therefore many years of asset value left.

We all find it frustrating, but I believe so far we've only sold when a player wants to go or won't sign a new deal. See my comment about Virgil above. I can't think of one with more hen two years left on a contract. People Complained we didn't get enough for Clyde or Vic but that was because they only had one year left. Another year and we'd have only got 15-20 for Mane.

And in that time, were hoping we win something, or qualify for the big one and the player wants to stay...

... see a pattern forming in a circle shape? A vicious one.

Fair enough mate, we'll have to agree to disagree. Took a while but can see now the key bits we disagree on, and the nature of each means neither of us are likely to change our mind, so we will have to (as always) see how it goes and enjoy the ride in the meantime.

Like I said earlier, it sometimes takes quite a lot of posting back and forth to truly understand what the other person is saying, particuarly in text form. This conversation would of been done in about 5 minutes in person <laugh>

Yeah of course, hopefully the win something happens this year. It's a slow process for sure and like you say, a vicious circle. I'm just hopeful that we can slow the amount that leave down from now on. The big thing for me is to get Romeu signed up to a new deal. Then I can only really seeing Virgil leaving this Summer (As much as I'd love to have another year out of him, just think there's too many big clubs in dire need of a top cb, and willing to throw a **** load of cash at it!).

The downside to what we do is it's hard to build forward if 2+ are going every Summer, like I say I'm hopeful we can slow that down a bit.

It certainly makes it more understandable and less disappointing when it feels like we have had a few good years out of them. Perhaps people felt that we didn't have Mane at his best for long because he took a long time to bed in. Hoping that Boufal et. al will also develop with time in a similar vein.

Oy! No need for that. Of course he can be odious, but he's ours. Get with the game, mate. It's called discussion. Vin is a wind-up merchant (when he chooses to be). So too is CBK, and even the usually sanguine FLT has his moments.

So kitchen and heat, mate. This is the saints forum.

Last night was a good discussion with differing opinions. No name calling.

@IanThumwood - seriously come back on and join in. Discussions work if topics discussed, even when the postees clearly disagree. It isn't personal unless someone makes it personal.

I thought Mane was pretty good straight away without being perfect or consistent. Yes I agree, it would have been great to have longer out of him. I remember the day he signed his agent saying we were a stepping stone for bigger things.

My early assessment of Mane was something along the lines of 'raw talent, needs time, we'll make a big profit on him in a couple years'

Not often I get things spot on so thought I'd throw it out there <laugh>

Stoke allegedly want £12m for Bojan. Tha seems a fair price to me. I'd take him for that.
