Oh I'll step up. I just don't feel that 4-3-3 is a formation that suits our players at all compared to systems we've used in previous seasons. When we switched to 4-2-3-1 against Bournemouth with Davis linking up with upfront, we looked great and it worked. Of course finishing is an issue, but to have Tadic only on 1 goal I think it is, Long on 1 goal compared to other campaigns puts it down to more than just individuals under performing. Our cautious approach in games to contain opposition is surely down to Puel and that's why I lay the blame also on tactics.

Is there really much difference between 4-3-3 & 4-2-3-1?

Most players/teams will adapt during different spells of games and whether or not they have the ball etc.

It's a combination of lots of things. It's not as good, but it's not as bad as some are making out.... as Chilcos posts suggests. Some people don't want to hear that though.

Whatever the formation we, for me, are crying out for a forward who can hold up the ball and be more physical with the opposition CB's and whom others can play off.

Agreed, my worry slightly with this deal isn't the £17 ish million we might spend on gabbiadini, but what we might not spend on other players.... everyone (even claude) knows we need an option up top, but whilst a considerable amount, imho we need quality in other places on the field such as ACM at the very least and this should see us searching for another player commanding such a fee as gabbiadini.

Agree with your post, mine just born out of frustration at current situation.

I'd like to think largely we ignore the window situation and time of year and buy players with potential according to their development.

I know much of the time we'll never know which players we were in for in the summer that we missed out on, but I don't think many people would say we had a big/deep enough squad with enough quality at the start of the season and add this to the fact that the endless statistics we take from games and training show that many players haven't played to their potential.

This would say to me that we should be straight in at the start of the next window to plug the gaps, but whilst we may not ever know all the targets, it seems like with very few incomings it may well be a frustrating window again.

The frustration was that is wasn't addressed in the summer. Given the 2 games a week schedule we were light up front and light in attacking midfield and short of a CB. It cost us Europe and now it's costing us a decent league position.

I am not expecting it to be resolved in Jan. There is certainly no point buying any sub standard forward at a crazy price

I'm confused as to how something so subjective like a 'chance' can be made into a stat? Does it include all shots? Because shots from 30 yards out are half chances at best. The stat doesn't say anything about the nature of the chances, so perhaps this year we've had a lot more half chances but many fewer really good clear cut chances. It may not mean that at all. Would be interesting if anyone could give some details about the methodology as at the moment I don't think that stat is all that useful.

It's similar to the stats about 'forward passes'. Always found them strange, you could easily make 20+ super easy forward passes in a game which don't really achieve anything for your team. HOwever one brilliant sideways pass perfectley in time to an on rushing player could lead to a goal. I find it interesting that stats have taken on so much but they don't yet quite seem to describe what is a complex game (as compared to how easy it is for stats to describe a game like cricket for example).

I've also wondered how a 'chance' is defined by stat.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we don't create chances. But to create more chances and score less goals is a horrible stat.
