I want a good performance and a win to build some momentum if possible. Confidence, confidence, confidence.
One of my earliest memories of Burnley was when Saints played there under Lawrie (must have been late 70s) in a 3-3 draw. The reason I recall it was because it was on Matchx of the Day and I had crept downstairs to peep through the living room door to see why Lawrie missed the start of the second half. Back then the dug out was on the far side of the pitch from the tunnel and I heard on Grandstand that Lawrie had to walk around the outside of the pitch for he second half. I think he missed a goal. It was 3-3 that day.
I remember Burnley when they were a selling club. They would bring on great young players and then flog them to other clubs to survive. We had Brian O'Niell from them. They were the Southampton of the 70s.
I loved watching Brian O'Neil, especially on the wet muddy pitches when he would launch into a sliding tackle from, what seemed to be about 5 yards away, taking ball and player. Football was a proper contact sport, in those days, and so long as the ball was taken first, it was considered a fair tackle. These days you get carded for giving dirty looks.
Lawrenson has gone for a draw because, and I quote "Burnley can't win every game at home". Great reasoning there Mark. So glad you are paid thousands for that level of analysis.
Makes you feel old. I was bloody there, mate! If memory serves, Peachy scored a great goal to equalise in a game where we'd been outplayed for much of it. Days of Boyer and SuperMac. Phil Boyer only won one England cap. One of the great overlooked. Very skilful player, but never attracted the attention of a big club. I still think of his signing and that of Alan Ball as evidence at just how good a judge and persuader our Lawrie was. Signing Ball when we were in Div 2 seemed absurd. 77/78 is still one of my favourite seasons. Anyway, on to tomorrow. Using Lawro's logic, I'm going for an away win as we are crap away from home and they are so strong at home!
I thought we might just be imagining his fear of the red & white It would be interesting to see a Lawro table ... if anyone has access to such a thing ... or a few hours to waste
Last game saw us getting more bodies into the box when we did attack. Hopeful sign, Confidence is key
I'd kinda like to see Stephens get a go at CB, he's clearly got some quality and since we have questions over the futures over basically all our CBs it'd be good to get a look at him. On the other hand giving Maya a run would be good since he's playing very well. *shrugs*
