The best thing about last night is that it has made me look forward to the next, rather than with trepidation. If that's done it for the fans, it must have done wonders for player morale.
Agreed, there is no reason we can't get a result at Anfield but as others have said I think we need to use the same game plan as at home (we played on the break so not to much of a stretch) rather than try to hold on to the lead. Every time we've tried to hold on to something this season we've come unstuck.
We made Liverpool look ordinary. We ceded a similar smount of possession to Spurs though, and they had us chasing shadows. Liverpool don't play the high press anywhere near as well as Spurs do. I don't think we have too much to fear at Anfield because Liverpool, while clearly having some great players, are a good team not a great one. Twice we've been outclassed this season - once by Chelsea and once by Spurs. Liverpool aren't in that class imo, and are in a false position in the league. On last night's showing, and on their previous trip to St Marys this season, they aren't in the title race. And they aren't significantly better than thus, though they do have more talented individuals. In a team game though, we have nothing to fear now.
Was thinking exactly same. Now there's more chance of CP playing a settled team I don't think we'll be seeing as much rotation (though actually we do have 6 in 20 coming up...)
What has Redmond got to do to get a break from Saints fans? That was one of his best performances yet in a Saints shirt. And he went very close to making it 2 with a sublime chip over Karius at the end. I thought Tadic was far better than he has been recently as well, linking up in some great counters on both sides of the pitch. Just shows we all watch the same game and see something different.
Answer = be Mané at his absolute best. Same with Puel. He needs to be the combination of Shankley and Clough.
Hopefully that'll show Puel that he does know what he's doing, and that the 32,000 people in the stands that all claim to know better than him, probably don't. But I reckon he knows that anyway.
I was really impressed with Redmond. A couple weeks ago those chances he got would not have been on target. He was making the keeper work which is so important, just a shame he didn't come away with two on the night. But, his tracking back and work rate was as important as the goal he scored. A very mature performance from the young man......and he even had enough energy to get angry and starting having a go at anyone near him! Bless.
In terms of the second leg: Dear Lord, please let Senegal have a barnstorming AFCON. May Sadio Mane be fit and healthy and play every minute of every game as they storm to the final. Please. Cheers, Saints fans.
To be fair I think he was talking about the media.........he is right........When ever we win against the so called big boys the media always reckon they had a bad day, or we were lucky. Never that Saints played well. Other than as an after thought, signifying we were the also rans. We as Saints fans are used to this...............
Can someone have a word with Dusan about 'falling theatrically'. There was one pretty awful swan dive in there.
We will probably need a acon thread at some stage, people will be wanting to know the progress of teams so we know what players will still be out there. I believe that Senegal will go further than the group stage, but if they don't Mane's will be released on the 23rd.......two days before the EFL semi final SL. With them luck.
So very pleased with this result...as others have said a pity that we could not sink a couple more. We badly need to score at Anfield though and I think it will be an interesting game. I too hope Saints just don't try to defend their slender lead. It is a must they go out to win this at Anfield.....Liverpool will not sit back.......(I have never known them to do that anyway) they will give us great opportunities. Saints its there for the taking.....COYS!!
