All these boffins who do these calculations may be right, i'm not doubting them. But, so far we have relied heavily on his goals and with what is coming out of the club, re: transfers coming in, we're going to rely heavily on him to keep us up. With that in mind he's worth £90m as that's what we would lose if we went down.

Now there are other arguments, permutations and calculations, but with the exception of Borini, Januzaj, PVA and maybe Anichebe chipping in with a few goals, we rely heavily on Defoe to get goals and i genuinely can't see any of the others getting sufficient to keep us ion this league.

We just need to think of positives if it happens

Yeah unbelievable - think someone mentioned earlier but the £14m fee is the £6.5m we paid for Altidore + all of Defoe's wages including bonuses - in which case, Cristiano Ronaldo was a £500m+ player (etc.) When it suits them and it makes it look more of a story, they'll do this. When Chelsea sign someone it's just the transfer fee that's quoted

While Pele's league tally might have been against substandard opposition...lets not forget he played and perform at the very highest level. Even to get into that Brazilian side of the 70's (IMHO the best side ever) you had to be extra special...he was. I imagine he now wishes he tried the european leagues, But Pele was a real legend of the game, I have been lucky enough to watch him, Eusebio and George Best live..All 3 for the me, the best players that have ever kicked a ball. But I do agree his goals tally is somewhat questionable. By the way, by mentioning Rashford in the same breathe as Pele, I assume was tongue in cheek.

Well I think the club would accept but after chasing cash in Canada I think Defoe realises being really rich and being super rich isint much different and you can't buy Premier league appearances. Unlike F1 where you can buy your way into a top sport.

Tevez is a good shout but I don't think he has the fitnesss level or skill level of Defoe at the current time.

No I agree he was probably a very good striker, but not the best, he can't be, he played at a lower level than the likes of Maradona and Ronaldo.

Yeah, he played in that great Brazil side, and that proves he was very good.

Rashford slightly edges it for me.

Perhaps not the fitness level, he won't need it over there.

The Brazilian league would have been a much a higher standard back then than it is now. Very few players left Brazil for other countries in Pele's era. There were even only a handful in the Colombian 'El Dorado' League of the late 40s/early 50s, which attracted players from across South America and Europe. Pele's goal tally is exaggerated by the number of tour games Santos played against weak opposition in odd places as they attempted to cash in on the names of their star players.

He claims about 1300 goals iirc, but his recognised figure is around 750 and I think the documentary I watched said around 450 of them come against pathetic local clubs in a crap tourny called the campeonato or something. You probably know more about it than I do.

So all those goals, at a sub-professional level when he could have just thought outside the box and went to Italy or Spain.

You have to use his Brazil figures, they played in some crap tournaments also, but it's all you can use. He was a player in a very good team.

If Defoe went out there and it would be specifically for the money its no different to what Gyan did to us.
i would hope that Defoe has what few footballers have nowadays and that's a conscience.

Yeah, they didn't originally have a national league, it was organised into state championships and then they had a sort of competition for state champions. When they did organise a national league the state championships didn't end so the big clubs ended up playing in as many as 7 domestic tournaments per season. Then there was the Copa Libertadores etc too. So Santos would have played a load of crap little local teams too. On top of that they had all the tour games against crap opposition- for example Pele scored 7 goals in 4 games against Hong Kong in 1974; he lists every goal in his autobiography. So while the big Brazilian clubs were better than they are now they still played a load of **** which boosted Pele's goal record beyond what it would be if he'd played elsewhere. He was a man who pretty much created his own myth though. He probably was the best in the world back then but maybe not of all time. He was probably the first to get such international adulation though which probably helps the myth.

I think that's too much. I think we should be selling him for about £4m.

That way we can look as stupid as you did when you posted that.

Ronaldo and Messi play for top clubs in relatively tin pot leagues when you compared the chopping block teams they weekly score regularly against. Both have poor WC records as they are only as good as the players around them. Pele's WC record speaks for itself.

Had Pele come to Europe he would have had a huge impact, but we will never know.

Find it difficult to describe La Liga as a tin pot league. The likes of Sevilla, Bilbao, Villareal, Athletico, Valencia - and the obvious two that Messi & Ronaldo play for.

The above out perform out English clubs year after year in the Europa League and Champions League.

Pele was more than just a goal scorer, he had star quality, a wonderful football brain, and magic in his boots. Its not fair on Rashford, and I am a big fan of the lad, to compere him to Pele just yet.
