Hes played a lot of games as a winger throughout his career. I know he plays as a forward aswell, but he won't play that position under Mourinho. He's hardly gonna stick Ibrahimovich out on the wing. Ibra won't have the pace to track back:biggrin:

    Clearly not.

That's way too complex a thought process.

No, what will happen is we'll buy Griezmann and convert him to a wing back. Obvious.

Zlatan will be with us for atleast another year. So where is Griezman gonna play in the mean time?

Griezman isn't a Mourinho type striker anyways. He's not a big powerful target man like Drogba, Benzema, Costa or Ibra. If Mourinho is buying him I'm fairly sure his intentions will be to play him as a winger or attacking midfielder. Mourinho's whole system relys on having a powerful striker.

Zlatan cannot possibly playing games at the rate he is now. He will need to be managed carefully to keep him playing his very best, particularly next season so buying Griezman to play with him/in place of him makes perfect sense .............................at least to me.

He's not a No.9 syle centre forward I'll give you that.

To suggest Mourinho can't function without one is nonsense though.

The guy is 5'9 and built like a rake, he's not cut out to play as a lone striker. Everything that goes up to him would just come straight back. Griezman is a player who feeds off other players, he's not a player who can play up there on his own.

There is no way Mourinho would buy a player of his physical stature and play him as a lone striker.

He could go with 2 up front, but playing with 2 strikers is far to adventurous for Mourinho. So he can only be buying Griezman to play as a winger

Im not saying he wouldn't link up with those players. But those players are very similar to Griezman. Martial and Rashford in particular could also play through the middle or on the wing.

The 3 players you mention would benefit more from playing off a powerful striker than they would a similar type of player, especially with the rigid way Mourinho sets his teams up. Griezman too would play a lot better supporting Ibra, than he would do if he was the focal point of our attacks. A little man is not suited to playing as a lone striker:biggrin:

Surely that depends on how you play?
If used as a target man he would probably fail but who said he would be a loan striker, with the players I have mentioned he would be 1 of 3 inter-changing strikers with a very dangerous player pulling the strings.

Mourinho will never play with an all out front 3, you know that and so does everyone else.

Whoever plays out wide will always be shackled down with defensive duties, this will mean the player in the middle of the 3 will often be left isolated up front on his own:biggrin:

I know, I was really surprised how well Ronaldo and di Maria did as full backs <ok>

Truth is, he's replacing Rooney, not Zlatan.

Centre forward is in good hands long term with Rashford and Martial. Neither of whom is currently a classic No. 9 but both have the potential to be top class centre forwards.

Which is quite obvious to anyone who actually watches rather than looks at stats.

Ronaldo just flat out refused to do it, and that's was one of the reasons they fell out. Unfortunately for our wingers, they aren't scoring multiple goals every game like Ronaldo, nor are they anywhere near as good as he is. Ronaldo is one of the few players who can ignore Mourinho's negative orders as there isn't another player anywhere near as good sitting on the bench to replace him.

Either way as I've already pointed out, Ronaldo under achieved by his very own high standards during Mourinho's 3 season spell at Madrid. He never won a Ballon Do'r whilst Mourinho managed him, and has won 3 of the last 4 since he's left.

Di Maria was shackled down with defensive duties during Mourinho's time at Madrid, so much so that he often had to be substituted after an hour, through exhaustion:biggrin:

I thought you were comparing strikers mate. As Chief has already alluded to, he's a centre forward. He has been since his move to Atletico. Unless you're harping back to his time as a LW at Real Sociedad? But what would be the point of that?

It's ironic that Simeone who is also considered a defensive minded coach put Griezmann as a CF where he's scored tonnes of goals. And now you're criticising Mourhino for wanting to buy him. There's irony in there somewhere.

As for Ronaldo and Benzema, the question was... did he have them tracking back to cover the defence? No.

Does he have Ibrah tracking back to cover the defence? No.

So it's a completely irrelevant point.

He may have played mainly as a striker for Atletico, but that's not to say he's still not very affective as a winger. Atletico play a very narrow 442, so he wouldn't really be suited to playing in a wide position in that team, as the wide men for them, because they only have 2 in the centre of midfield don't have a real licence to get forward. They are a very drilled side, and the wide men don't have a lot of freedom. So Griezmans talents would be somewhat wasted out wide in that system.

However as was proven for France in Euro 2016, and for France in general he can still play very well as a winger in a 433, with a big man (Giroud) in a central position to feed off. Griezman won player of the tournament and he scored the most goals, and a lot of that was down to assists from Giroud. So if he's not a winger then he does a very good job at pretending to be one for France.

Simeone being regarded as a defensive coach and the system he uses is completely irrelevant to this debate. Wether he's defensive or not, he still plays a 442, which is a system I don't ever recall Mourinho using. Just because both are defensive, it doesn't mean they set their teams up in a similar way. Are you trying to say Mourinho is going to change his whole philosophy and play a 2 up front just to accommodate Griezman as a striker. Especially when Griezman has already proven he can play as a winger for club and country.

Trust me if Griezman comes, Mourinho will use him as a winger, not as a lone centre forward, a position he is not suited to playing:biggrin:

My feeling is that he is looking for a goal scorer (striker, no9, no10 or whatever) and Griezman won't be the only one coming as both Rooney and Zlatan (later) need replacing. I like G as he llinks well with the others in the team and he is used to being supplied by Pogba.

There isn't really a world class out and out number 9 who could do the role Ibra is doing now, who would be available to us. Obviously you have likes of Lewandowdki and Diego Costa but these guys aren't likely to be available.

Harry Kane is a possible, but then again I actually think he plays better as a 2nd striker rather than an out and out striker. The other player I do like is Lukaku, but Mourinho has history of selling him at Chelsea, so can't see him doing a massive u turn on his opinion of him.

So who knows who Mourinho has on his shortlist of strikers. I certainly don't think there is an obvious target
