I've seen loads of welsh valleys that look like that, can't see anything resembling the pacific coast in that pic, so I'll take your word for it <whistle>

I'm just kidding tbh. It does resemble a drive I took through to a place called Lake Vrnwy (sp) once.

My sister and brother in law did a month out on the west coast of US last summer. They did that drive there as well and went up to San Francisco as well. They loved the States, absolutely loved it, but said SF was the most depressing and downbeat places they'd been to.

Really ? Where in SF did they go ? It's probably one of the most vibrant and eclectic cities in California, alongside Los Angeles in my opinion. There are some rough areas, down near the zoo and the mission district, but overall I think it's a great city.

Not sure, but definitely in the city itself. They talked about the number of homeless and the way a lot of the working class folk have been priced out of the area through extortionae rent increases etc. They said it was the most acute examples of the "haves" and "have nots". They didn't think there was much else going on.

Drives me nuts. She gets it from her mum. We'll be watching some quiz and a question comes up that her mum either knows the answer to or thought she knew the answer to so we have to have a ****ing extended commentary on whatever the subject was. Eventually she shuts up, hears the end of another question or answer and asks "what was that?".

I DON'T ****ING KNOW AS YOU'VE DRONED ON THROUGH A DOZEN QUESTIONS!!!!

    Stan thought to himself.

I guess like any big city there are examples of the above, and yes homelessness is a big issue is cities right across the US. The welfare state is basically non existent and thousands of people slip through the net. For the richest state in the richest country in the world, it's unforgivable really.

As for San Francisco though, it's not particularly worse than anywhere else in CA. Los Angeles has a far more stark expression of the difference between the haves and the have nots. I'm not sure where your relatives went and what they did, but personally I think SF is a great, vibrant city with loads going for it.

Nah, West Ham are having a bit of a mare, but I think they will put a lot of that down to it being their first year in the OS. If they get rid of Bilic now, they will really be in the ****.

Strangely enough I had something similar the other night. I don't know how, after 16 years of marriage, I discovered my mrs has never seen Shawshank Redemption <doh> So we decide to watch it... and at every great bit of dialogue she keeps talking about some irrelevant bit of bollox "what are they spreading up on the roof there", "it's rough the way the old man is being treated now that he's out". Totally took the shine off a great film. And this was me every time she interrupted...

At the end she says "that was a good film"

Me "You literally have no idea!" (I thought)

I can't really comment. They love the States hence why they did a month out there. Only going by what they were saying. Apparently rents went up astronomically (something to do with the rise of the rich/IT folk up in "the hills"?) so most people couldn't afford to continue living in their own homes anymore. Like listening to anyone about their hols, I only paid attention for so long.
