No long term benefit plus they are actually harming small businesses and shops which is bad for the economy. Shops and businesses close early in order to allow their employees to avoid trouble, this results in a loss of business, which means a loss of revenue for both the business and the government through tax/VAT etc. This means that the government will have less money to spend on public services and the cutbacks will get worse.

Hang about. Wasn't the "original" reason because of this guy Duggan's death?

Fair enough you want to PROTEST about that but this is just gone beyond that.

You listen to some of the people bragging about it and they don't even know.

It has nothing to do with the police "oppression" or the recession or anything like that. I though the UK was one of the more developed countries in the world?

If that was the case then there would be at least some form of organised and orderly protest. Even in Russia when there were riots last year after a football fan got stabbed by minorities there were also some protests and memorials. In actual fact, the people who are hit hardest by the cuts are the ones unable to leave their homes because their neighbourhoods have been overrun. And the people organising the protests are the gang members who wouldn't take a job if there was full employment.

I have no doubt that the cutbacks and economic crisis are contributing to the scale of the problem, but to describe the riots as being purely a symptom of the current economic situation seems quite naive to me.

I can only speak for the bits of London that I know like Enfield, tottenham, wood green etc but the people there are not doing this as some kind of political action against the goverment, they just want to steal and cause trouble. They don't have the mentality of bettering themselves or looking after the community, its all about increasing their material wealth for them. Of course poverty in those areas doesn't help the situation but I think its much more down to them not caring about other people than any economic factor.

the is no simplistic rationale or solution to the recent events, it's far too complex for that.

but looking at most of the CCTV & Media coverage it's clear to see it's mostly mindless yob mentality of the scum of "society" just out for themselves and couldn't careless about the community

And organised protests have a history of working in this country do they Swarbs?

I know i have made it seem simple by saying the rioting is purely a symptom, but i really can't be arsed to write a 5000 word paper to include everything i mean.

A good summary of exactly what i mean was what Ken Livingstone said a couple of nights back on BBC News - I can't find the exact clip on youtube but if it becomes available i'll be sure to post it <ok>

I don't think i'm being naive not one bit :)

EDIT: Didn't realise what thread i was on - thought i was on the Liverpool riot thread. Swarbs if you're interested in what i really think then take a scroll through the Liverpool riot thread. I really can't be arsed to repeat it all again on this board! Although i admit, i was a little staunch so take that into account!!! <ok>

Maybe the government should stop spending billions each year blowing up poor innocent civilians in real troubled countries. I guess that would be a good start <ok>
